The same here. I used to try every new antispyware program listed on download.com, also I tried all of the rogue antispyware products too.

I remember a friend having a problem with homepage hijacking once, and having to install and run 4 or 5 different free trials of antispyware software until I found one which was able to successfully remove the hijacker.

    I miss those days somewhat.

It was amazing how much spyware they found, when I thought my system was clean ;)

So true. Back 'in the day' when many AVs didn't include things that were in antispyware applications... there were many things discovered by different AS app's that got by AVs.

Now almost everything is 'antimalware' encompassing the larger spectrum of threats.

Actually I was referring to rouge antispyware software deliberately identifying clean files as being infected. However, what you said was very true for legitimate antispyware software.

BoClean was another one from back in the PestPatrol days.

While I never used BoClean, it was pretty popular around here.

And the developer -- can't remember his name -- spent quite a bit of time here.

    Do i use Pest Patrol.

    Answer is simple. Yes

Orkin & Action Pest Control are the 2 most dependable ones around for rodent and crawling bugs. :D

I am so sorry. When i first caught a look at that title just couldn't resist the temptation to take a low swipe at it.

Embarassingly i did.once install it on windows 98SE but it wasn't for long. Uninstalled it, forgot about it and never looked back again.

Just to try then out, and also learn more about rogue software in doing so. I was never concerned that they would harm my system, I would install them and when I'd finished trying them I would uninstall them.

    YOU?

Look at my post count and join date. Add to that my time as HijackThis Expert and Moderator at the Lavasoft Support Forums in 2003.

Pest Patrol was circulating and making noise for Windows 98 back then and considered for a time a competitor.

Talk about old? Uh and i'm in my 50'ish trip around our solar celestial sphere

How about a real blast from the past?

I was going to mention Webroot SpySweeper since it was my very first (radar) antimalware but for you nostalgia buffs how about Bazooka!

Remember that one? And the seemingly 2 second scan?

That was an excellent product. Quite surprisingly when they had a fully functioning 30 day trial version available it gave too many false positives for my liking, but after dropping the free trial version it no longer gave me false positives.

I miss the 1 second scans.

It only did the 1 second quick scans, there was no option to do a full scan. It would scan for known file and registry locations for spyware.

Obviously this approach can't be used for traditional file infecters which can infect any exe file on a system, but it worked well for spyware which only installed to specific locations. For example if something installs to a specific folder under Program Files, there is really no need to search all of C drive for the files it installs, just that specific folder.

In fact some of the poorly coded early antispyware programs gave lots of false positives due to them searching the entire hard drive for specific files rather than just searching the specific folder the spyware installed to.
