Some time back, I used to use WinRar as my archiver/extract tool, even though I had both WinRar and 7-Zip installed. The reason was back then, I came across archive(s) that 7-Zip wouldn't extract which WinRar could. Nevertheless, at 1 point in time, I decided to uninstall WinRar and try to convert to using 7-Zip as the default tool instead simply due to it's nature of being free and open source. FYI: I didn't bother to do any speed or compression ration testing at all. Ever since then, funnily enough, I've yet to come across an archive which it wouldn't handle and so didn't look back at WinRar. However, if the need arises, I guess I'm fine with either one of these 2.
The only reason for me to switch could be it being faster. I can do everything I want with Winrar really, so that's why I compared speed.
Nope, the interface is too crude. I have licenses for WinRAR and WinZip. WinRAR is probably the better product, due to the included and very good quality self extractor and lifetime license. I had originally purchased a WinZip license for v6 (when it was a supposed lifetime license) and have upgraded a few times, but the money gouging has gotten bad enough I will not likely continue. PowerArchiver is not bad but I do not use it. I prefer all of them to 7-Zip.
PowerArchiver is nice, but it turns out that the trial version won't let you fully test part of its functionality; it wants you to buy an upgrade.
Same here. Too bad there's no new version since 9.20 stable or 9.30 Alpha. At least not as far as I'm aware of.
I don't use 7-Zip as I do not like the interface at all (I can say the same about WinZip too). I use HaoZip instead as I like the interface and it is also free. Also, HaoZip checks for malware in archives using detection from QQ and 360.
Yes, it's one of the best software around. I like much the archiving encryption to store some sensitive files.
I agree for the most part. I used WinRAR for a long time and only switched to HaoZip because it was free and I had never purchased a license for WinRAR. However HaoZip has an interface which is fairly similar to WinRAR.
There's a 9.32 alpha release recently: http://sourceforge.net/p/sevenzip/discussion/45797/thread/49e6a4d4/
i use 7-zip at work, it's ok. but i am a WinRAR user for as long i can remember, it's interface is unbeatable, has a good compression ratio (don't care much about it) and handles every archive i need. so, 7-zip is my nr. 2 choice.
Oh there is? Didn't know that, thanks. Anybody here uses PeaZip? It makes use of 7-zip's... engine (and some others') with a fancier GUI.
Used to use Winzip but then changed to Winrar and never looked at anything else. It works as it should so i see no reason to change. Lol
