    Sounds good.

One thing I would add (unless I miss it), is not just do a before and after measurement, but after using the machine for a few days, see which strategies reduce refragmentation.

Also, as you know different defraggers as designed (by default) for different frequency of defragmentation, would you leave the defraggers to run at their recommended frequencies ?

Me neither, I remember that Diskeeper had a setting to defrag, when the screensaver appeared. Is that "idle" ? :D

I don't want to say some of you guys are on crack, but just to make sure, I logged into the office server to check. Lo, O&O has Access, Created, or Modifid options, and I know it's had them for at least a version or three back.

Frankly, a combination of approaches is best - modified is lame for system/program drives, where clumps of files that gets used by a piece of software will be grouped by access times, but may have wildly varying modified times, but for data drives modified works better.

Of course, O&O and PD have system file defragmenters using the system's prefetch log anyway. (Never used diskkeeper.) That way it attempts to lay out files into one long solid read, though of course it never actually works out that way.

    both are great

if you have a fat32 drive, only one answer ... choose perfectdisk, the new diskeeper will only go up about 8% in about 12 hours for fat32 drives.

on the other hand, both are very fast on ntfs drives, so i would recommend both... and if you dont have a ntfs drive, convert it.

    cmd

    vol c:

    convert c: /fs:ntfs

then put in the volume name when it requests (it tells you this after you typed vol :c above.

and then let windows do it all for you... might reboot once or twice, but then it done, the whole process takes between 5-10 mins.

This must be a new feature of PD8, I never saw that in PD7. I was glad it wasn't activated.
Good question : do you need a screensaver to activate the defragging ?

Maybe this a bit offtopic but ppl seem to be interested in finding out what program does its job better...You all mentioned d-keeper, PD and O&O.

Nobody mentioned mst defrag ? I tested d-keeper,PD, and O&O. I like d-keeper and O&O and I am now testing mst defrag.

Mst is doing a good job here !Light on resources and keeps , or seems to keep, the hd defragged.

Any of you trialed mst ?

    Thanks

To do a controlled experiment, it is necessary to defrag the same image each time.

It takes a long time for significant defragmentation to appear after a full defrag.

    What is "mst defrag"?
Do you mean the builtin MSFT defragger?
If so, it's a waste of time to compare that with any reasonable product.
As I recall, most of the defrag vendor web sites have papers describing how inferior is the MST defragger,

Yes, I did, I like it. It simply works in the background.
What I miss is the reorder and defrag of directories and pagefile.sys, though.

    Which color: Mint or Fuchsia?

It's more a matter of personal preferences than anything else.

I am wondering what your thought's are on contig used with power defragmenter GUI.

This has been my method for defragging my hard drive along with pagedefrag. Seems to work good for for my system.

Diskeeper and perfectdisk don't seem to want to play nice with my setup for some reason. Have not tried O&O defrag yet.

I´ve always been a fanatic PD fan regarding defraggers...But after testing the new DK 11 premium I have to admit that I´m impressed...so impressed that I took away PD 8.0.35...Also,my impression is not based on theory but on the general "system feeling"...Even against earlier principles I turned on the aut. mode to test the new ifaast techn and got a clear perf gain...(Was used to never defrag "on the fly" due to Acronis TI incremental images sizes, but from now will only make full ones with TI)....

And others will swear by O & O.

And others will swear by (name a product).

There are subtle differences amongst products, and do not get sucked in by the needless ability to do background defrag.

    Reasons are obvious.

Just about every web site that discusses defrag software will have a paper, or thread, explaining why defragging is necessary.

You will find such papers at Raxco's web site.

:D i know they say its neccessary, but i wouldnt put it as a top priority.

im more worried about keeping my windows updated and my softwares updated, checking email etc etc browsing different kinds of software, giving them a good run before defrag comes into it.
