Sounds bad, but the results can be even worse. Why are such attacks feasible in the first place?

Because of the absolutely atrocious policies in place regarding the machines and the almost as bad "defenses" the machines employ. The lock issue is extremely disturbing, and there frankly is no excuse for any of this. Even if the defenses stay in place, you can at least attempt to maintain control by not being so free with the storage and use of the machine prior to elections. As they said, inspections are rare, so why pray tell does a poll worker need to have it in their house for a week or more? Poll workers don't have any need whatsoever (nor does anyone else besides people who work on them) to have access to the machines pre-election day. It isn't a part of their duties.
