And I also read Hopeful Cynic's comment, at AskWoody:
'Classic' taskbar & start button (that is: no Aero), and lack of ability to log in into a standard (non-administrator) user account, both are symptoms of the "Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service" issue.
    So that makes me think:
@Kerodo, do you have EMET installed?
If so, perhaps the combination of EMET and KB3153171 may have been the cause of your "Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service" issue.

It seems to me that if you are going to turn off Windows Update on W7/8, you should definitely have EMET installed to protect the OS and installed apps from unpatched exploits. If you do not have it you will be exposed to a lot of problems.

I fully expect that Microsoft will eventually see that W7/8 users are using EMET instead of WU as a security stop gap and they will eventually kill it. They say that W10 addresses what EMET has always provided, so the writing is on the wall. EMET was introduced for Enterprise users to protect them from exploits while MS worked on developing a patch. When the Enterprise users migrate to W10, it is obvious that Microsoft will kill EMET.

Ok, I suppose that's possible. I have heard something like that too. What bothered me was that I couldn't think of any reason for all the processing, it seemed to go on for 15-20 minutes, very intense disk i/o and some cpu also. I'll keep that in mind if there is ever a "next time". :)

@Stupendous Man No, I don't use EMET at all, haven't for several years now. Interesting. I'm x64 also, if that makes a difference. It did exactly that though, the Event Service failed, and I got the "classic" taskbar and start button, no Aero! So that part makes sense. I will keep KB3153171 in mind and put that on my bad list if I try to update again later. Thanks for the info!

Ok, thanks emmjay... I will consider using EMET then. Both my browsers (Chrome & Firefox) have uBLock Origin installed, so that screens out a lot. Also have BitDefender Free, it seems to work fairly well. Aside from that, nothing else. EMET might be a good idea.

http://www.infoworld.com/article/30...updating-but-dont-call-it-a-service-pack.html We're making available a new convenience rollup for Windows 7 SP1 ... [it] contains all the security and non-security fixes released since the release of Windows 7 SP1 that are suitable for general distribution, up through April 2016. Install this one update, and then you only need new updates released after April 2016.... This convenience update is completely optional; it doesn't have to be installed and won't even be offered via Windows Update -- you can choose whether or not you want to use it.

Great news for updates after July 2016 - if they will remove GWX and telemetry updates.

    From same source:
So they will release single update that will contain all non-security updates. That means telemetry + all bug fixes in one package with no possibility to pick those that you want.

Perhaps. And that would be terrible.
Or the single updates will still be offered as well, and the monthly rollups are extra.
As usually, Microsoft speaks in riddles.
We'll see what they will come up with.

Oh man, that would be brutal. Would they do that? Did I even have to ask?

Yes, that was most likely the cause.

I'm going to give it another try now... am restoring my image as we speak. I'd like to see if I can figure out what all the activity is about.

Process Explorer is a good starting ponit:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653
Use that to try to determine what it is doing. In my case it was scanning a large archive I had in my downloads folder. For 45 minutes.

Well the aforementioned 'Rolled up' update arrived in my optional updates today --- KB3156417
This update package fixes the issues that are documented in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:
    • KB3155039 Error 1326 when you change domain account password in Windows
    • KB3155218 Memory leak occurs in the Lsass.exe process after you install security update 3067505 in Windows

    plus KB3123862 -- more Windows 10 nonsense
    plus KB3139923

    All hidden for now.
