I think quietman didn't mean the GWX tray icon, but the actual Windows Update tray icon, indicating there's another new darned update available, of which to decide whether or not to install it or to hide it.

Yes , he did indeed mean that !

    And today , there's another one ....

    Has anybody seen this ?
    KB915597

It claims to be a definition update for Windows Defender but clicking the "more info " link doesn't
    lead to anything helpful.
NB - " Once you have installed this item it cannot be removed "
    I haven't seen that before !

Yeah, none of it is very funny. I'm installing 7 from scratch today (again) from the SP1 disk. This time, I will try and filter out ALL the bad updates from lists that I've found. If I can get it done in 2 or 3 days, I'll be pretty happy... If not, then I'll just have to cry again and give up.. :)

Good luck! People have laughed at me for waiting at least a fortnight before installing any MS update. I think it's de rigueur these days.

Nope, I definitely won't laugh any more. I have a list here that I will avoid installing, and once I'm up to date, I will do exactly what you guys have been doing.. wait, listen, and watch for the bad ones... If I can keep 7 clean, I'll be a happy camper again. :)

    Just one list ?
    Lucky you !
I have four ..... although I suppose I could consolidate them into one :)

    I still can't find much information on KB915597 .
    I'm using W7 Home Premium 64-bit
On my Update notification it says published 29/09/2015 yet I've seen postings about it on other forums that are two years old !

I'm starting to think that "KB915597" is a generic label and that it is the actual definitions within that change their ID number.
The only thing I can think of is that I uninstalled my previous AV and replaced it with Avira the day before KB915597 appeared.

Anyone got any suggestions on this ? ..... maybe I should change the settings in Windows Defender ?

I'm so getting an iMac for my next desktop computer. At least if Microsoft bork my present desktop I can convert it to Ubuntu.
It's curtains for Windows IMO! :argh:

I guess we have our answer as to if Microsoft would cut out it's Borking ways, I guess some people are just better at weathering the Borkfest :D.

It's now clear that Micro$oft are moving away from software as their core business , and into " Data Mining" in a massive way.
Let's not fool ourselves here .... what was really new or innovative about W10 ? ... or W8 for that matter ?
    NOTHING ! ..... that's what.

It was all cosmetic .... like putting lipstick on a pig.

OK , so they brought back the "Start Button " ... ... a quantum leap forward in software technology !

Apple haven't gone so far down that road .... .... yet ,
..... but keep in mind the old saying .... " Monkey see , monkey do ". - :)

It's like you have to be on a constant vigil to stop M$ borking your computer with an errant update. This isn't rock'n'roll ... this is borkicide! lol

Actually, that's what I did, consolidate about 3 or 4 lists from here at Wilders, and at DSLR and elsewhere. I think it hopefully covers most. Interesting thing happened this time. I did the update check (1st one) which again took 2 hrs 50 mins (Win and Office), and this time it put all of the bad ones that showed up (10 updates) into the Optional category, so it made my life a lot easier so far. I have yet to do the next several update checks, but I'm hoping it keeps the bad stuff in Optional. That way I can just avoid installing ANY Optional items. No need, right? So far so good though, it'll probably take most of today to finish and be up to date.. When I'm done, it's Macrium time for sure.. I never want to have to do all this ever again!
