Both 7x64 machines got hosed by KB3079904 earlier this evening. Basically got the error message that "This copy of Windows is not genuine". Lots of "You may be the victim of software counterfeiting" dialogs popping up. Validation status action required, blah, blah, blah. Printer stopped working, Outlook email shut down, no matter how many times I entered my Microsoft product key it was spitting back error codes and telling me to go purchase a valid license. It was obvious as can be that it was KB3079904, because each machine puked upon restart after installing it. System restore got me back in business on both machines.

Have you been installing all of the previous updates or have you been hiding the ones related to W10 , like many of us here ?

    It's just a thought .....

JFYI, I have been installing all updates/patches including recommended ones and the patch in questions didn't cause any issues on my Win 8.1 machine.

    I hid 3035583 and three others, 2952664, 3040272 & 3065979.
Besides 3035583, what other w10 updates were there?

Nothing surprises me in recent times with Microsoft. I've never seen a company try so hard to alienate its customers.

That's terrible. MS15-078 (KB3079904): Vulnerability in Microsoft font driver could allow remote code execution: July 16, 2015. I have a feeling a patch like this or very similar caused a lot of problems a while ago.

I agree, recently in the license for Windows 10 / Life span 10 years Microsoft said it was tied to Windows 7 or 8 or 8.1 Life span IE. windows 7 in 2020 8 and; Windows 8/ 8.1 in 2023 which Microsoft has been saying since febuary more recently Microsoft refreshed the lifespan of Windows 10 to October 2025, so in other words Microsoft tried to cut 2 years off Windows 10 Lifespan then had a re-think and changed it. Then there is the whole hiding/delaying security updates witch may break other features/programs which still has yet to be resolved.

Sorry about your problem. I just installed KB3079904 and so far no problems as of yet.:doubt: Also had hid 2952664, 3040272 & 3065979. 3035583 is no where to be found either hidden or installed here.(strange) Windows 7 64 bit. Meanwhile kind of on edge waiting for something to happen....

I think that I removed the updates* that cause Windows 7 to upgrade to 10.

I got an email from Microsoft about the upgrade as if I were in the que but I assume that is just a mass mailing versus really triggered by my update situation.

*Here are the KBs that I hide/uninstalled:

    KB2952664
    KB3035583
    KB3065987
    KB3068708

My update settings are: 'Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them' and I have Recommended updates unchecked.

Do I need to do anything else to prevent prevent Windows 10 being trigger on my end?

I'm seriously expecting them to cut Win 7 support earlier than they originally claimed.

Yep ! .... all the usual suspects , and an ugly mob they are too !
You hide them away and they just keep coming back , with fake noses and false beards.
They remind me of the low-level casino scamsters that you see in movies .... coin-on-a-string , etc.

    I don't think so .
Like other people on here , I have repeatedly hidden those same updates and I haven't seen the slightest sign of W10 .... ads , nagscreens etc.

I had no problem with this update, but others did, like you unfortunately.

I had no problems with the 904 update, but I did get the 583 thing installing itself multiple times... No big deal I guess..

Yeah, it probably wouldn't hurt to hide and forget about the majority of them... :)
