Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit: I always do manual Windows Updates (Prompt me when updates are available) and only install critical updates.

What is a summary of what may be causing hours and hours needed to download the Windows Updates? I downloaded and ran the Microsoft Windows Update Troubleshooter and no problems were found.

Yesterday, I decided to download and run the largest of the current Windows Critical Updates (Internet Explorer 11). When I ran the installer exe, it seems to get stuck (running for minutes with no progression). I also ran the standalone installer for one of the Windows 7 critical updates and it seemed to get stuck also.

I noticed that when I tried to download the standalone installers for the two .NET Framework critical updates, Microsoft seemed to be directing me to update to Windows 10 (No download links).

Is Microsoft 'messing' with people who still used Windows 7 for try to force them to update to Windows 10?

Are there any solution(s) to this problem?

    Thanks in Advance.

Note: I have two (2) Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit PC's with the same problem.

Install KB3161608 "June 2016 update rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1", which includes the component KB3161647 "Windows Update Client for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: June 2016", of which the KB article mentions it includes "An optimization that addresses long scan time for updates that's reported on some computers."
    N.B.
KB3020369, "April 2015 servicing stack update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2" , is a prerequisite for installing KB3161608.
If KB3020369 wasn't installed earlier, first install that one, before installing KB3161608.

    Thanks.

Is there any Windows 10 'crap' in the June 2016 update rollup for Windows 7 SP1?

KB3020369 got installed on my Win 7 build on 7/6. Since I only install security related updates, it must have been delivered as one. Also strangely, that update does not appear in my installation history whereas as other updates installed on 7/6 do. Unfortunately in my case, I ignored the KB3161608 rollup update when it was served up via Win Update notification.

I will say this this about Win Updating, it was working fine as of 7/6 and then mysteriously started acting up again a day previous to bork Tuesday. I can't believe this was just by coincidence.:cautious:

No Windows 10 crap mentioned in the KB3161608 article or in any of the linked KB articles, and there was no Windows 10 crap mentioned in any of the KB3161608 reviews.
I only know of an issue with Intel Bluetooth.

Don't know what the problem with downloads was. I restored my comp from an Image after trying various recommended solutions and all is well.

I found out my problem. A few months ago, I used GWX ControlPanel to prevent Windows 10 Upgrade stuff. I only used the setting "Click to Prevent Windows 10 Upgrades". I never did select the setting "Click to Prevent 'Get Windows 10' App". I decided to unselect "Click to Prevent Windows 10 Upgrades". Then everything started working. I ran the installer for KB3020369 and got the message that it was already installed (I missed seeing it in the Uninstall Programs.). I then installed KB3161608, rebooted and installed the Windows 7 Security Updates.

M$ still not giving up, eh. Wondering if M$ will return 5583 after the free period? Probably yes, but we'll see soon.

Doesn't look like it. Perhaps the other KBs will make a "final" appearance. ;)

I have a feeling it won't die even after the free offer. They'll come up with some other nagware update for people running Win 7 & 8. They are hell bent to get everyone to upgrade one way or another. I hope I'm wrong, but we will find out next month and the following months to come.

    Updates for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
    July 21, 2016 — KB3172605
This update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced and no new security updates are included. Key changes include:
    • Improved support in Microsoft Cryptographic Application Programming Interface (CryptoAPI) to help identify websites that use Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA-1).
    • Addressed issue in Microsoft Secure Channel (SChannel) that sometime causes Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.2 connections to fail depending on whether the root certificate is configured as part of the certificate chain for server authentication.

I installed it because I had previously installed KB3133977. Checked with GWX Control Panel and Never10 aftwerwards; all clear.

KB3172605 supersedes KB3161608, and adds the two new "improvements and fixes" that itman mentioned.
I installed KB3161608 last month, because of the KB3161647 fix "An optimization that addresses long scan time for updates that's reported on some computers."
I think I will wait a little, and then I'll install KB3172605, because of the two new "improvements and fixes".

Thanks for the reply JR. Will problably install KB3172605 also. I installed KB3161608 manually previously because I had problems with Windows update and so far all is fine so I will go ahead and install 3172605.
Thanks for the reply. Because of the above I will install KB3172605. As far as Woody is concerned, I don't know either what his point is. I just posted the web site info just for further information.
