Hi, I have already posted on this topic, but now I know that this event is due to the Acronis disk suite and I can be more precise about what is going on.

I installed Acronis Boot selector from the Disk Director Suite. I wanted a dual boot machine with each XP OS on a separate partition (and eventually a Linux partition later).

I partitioned my C drive into a C (the original partition with the OS) and a clean G partition.
I then installed XP pro on the new partition but upon rebooting the Acronis OS selector did not show up anymore (as it did before I partitioned the drive) and I could not boot again with the original C drive OS. Only with the new one.
The boot screen (the default windows one) gives me a choice between 2 versions of XP pro, one on G drive (the newest one) and one on the C drive (the older one).

When I try to boot with the C drive partition I get the following Message: System32\hal.dll missing

Now I believe that this file is missing because I found that the entire system files have been moved inside the bootwiz folder.

    Question:

How do I restore the OS selector to show up at boot?

How do I restore the OS on my C drive?

Thank you, I always liked the reformatting capabilities of Acronis Suite, but this is the first time I use the boot selector and things are not going too well.

I read the fix in the FAQ regarding BOOTWIZ, but I doubt it will work with my setup.

Hi, Thanks for the links. The tips should work, but I am concerned about the system folders. If The acronis OS selector program has put them there, the windows XP disk will not put them back the way they were.
I will wait to use any recovery strategy until someone familiar with the OS selector program can give me the go ahead.

Thank you for your kind help

I found the log from the BOOTWIZ and I tought of posting it here in case it could shed light on what my next step should be.

    1) Should I try and install Acronis Os Selector on the new partition hoping it will read my other partition as well and restore it?
    2) How do I make the OS selector appear at boot again otherwise? It worked well when I had one partition but since the new windows install it does not work anymore, and from the log I can tell it made some radical changes.

    Here is the log:

    Hello corrado444,

Thank you for your interest in Acronis Disk Management Software.

Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.

Please note that system files of all installed Windows OSes are copied to the BOOTWIZ folder when you install OS Selector. These files are not erased from their old location.

In order to make the OS Selector screen appear when booting you should reactivate it. You can do it in the following ways:

    1) Start Acronis Disk Director Suite 9.0 -> Tools -> OS Selector -> Tools -> Activate.
    2) Boot from a Bootable media and perform the similar actions desctibed in 1)

If the above doesn't help please download Acronis Report utility available at http://www.acronis.com/files/support/AcronisReport.exe and run it, create a report and send it to us. This would provide us with detailed information on the hard disk partition structure.

Please collect the information requested above and contact us from our web-site: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/my/support/ . Please don't forget to send the link to this thread along with gathered information. This would allow us to investigate the problem and help you with the solution.

    Thank you.
