So should the updated patch solve the problems with the previous update? Yes—and no. Microsoft previously released security update 2982791, which was the update that was pulled a week ago. The new update is labeled “2993651,” and should replace 2982791. As part of that process, Microsoft advised users to manually remove update 2982791 through a process of rebooting and deleting certain files.

Unfortunately, patching the previous patch won’t solve the problem. Microsoft still recommends that you uninstall security update 2982791 through the process outlined above, which includes wading through the system registry....http://www.pcworld.com/article/2599...ate-but-still-recommends-a-registry-hack.html

I uninstalled 2791 last week but did not do the registry part after that so not sure if i should install this 3651 update now. I did hide the 3651 update for now and not going to worry about it.

I uninstalled using the control panel last week and reinstalled the current update. I had no known problems with the first update but uninstalled as recommended.

See the FAQ on MS14-045 for move information.

You must qualify all of the prerequisites in order for this to patch correctly.

Some are reporting Blue Screens immediately after patching. Whether this is an isolated number of individuals or another borked Patch remains to be seen.

So did Microsoft layoff all of the smart people? If they don't get their act together quickly I am going to disable Windows Update altogether.

Now here is a poll question:
    1. Did you uninstall the recommended update(s) even if you did not experience any noticeable system problems?
    2. Did you do the registry hack?
MS recommends the registry hack . My boss has a degree in nuclear physics ... he skipped # 2.

    Really MS!

I second guessed myself as I was not affected by KB 2970228, KB 2976897, KB2982791. Reading the above, I decided to uninstall them. Updater then reinstalled KB 2976897 and KB 2876331. KB 2970228 remained uninstalled. Now I get the error code 80246002 when checking for updates. Ran windows MR. fixit and it shows no problems. Ran the windows update diagnostic tool and it found another error 80070005. o_Oo_Oo_O? In other words I should have left well enough alone. Thank the gods for Macrium Reflect backup as that seems to be the next step. Any thoughts? :(

Registry hack ? How many hoops does one have to jump through. Might as well join the circus as a trained seal

To avoid this headaches, I always wait a while before updating. I just ran Windows update for W7 32 bits to see what it shows and update KB2976897 showed up in the screen. Is it OK to install that update now or not? I am still not going to update but if someone knows please let me know.

MS isn't testing Update Patches well enough as we've seen with Windows 8.1 and others.

This will impact PC sales eventually.

The above is what I get now when I go to windows update and click on "check for updates" . This is the result since I went through the uninstalling and installing the recent windows updates. ??

The problems are so bad that you'd be well-advised to uninstall the offending Automatic Update patches, even if your machine is working fine at the moment. It's possible, but by no means certain, that as long as the bad patches are at work, installing certain applications or modifying your fonts in specific odd (but entirely legitimate) ways may brick your machine. Microsoft buries that recommendation in the fine print of its FAQ for MS14-045:....http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsof...1-kb-2970228-kb-2975719-and-kb-2975331-248582

Didn't have any issues with KB2982791 on Win 8.1.1 so left it installed & installed KB2993651 today & not had any issues either & windows update still works fine.

It is interesting that the Microsoft Support site still mentions that the Fonts related issues still exist with the update, which means Microsoft has just fixed the system crashes and boot issues caused by the update.

Great news. Finally got windows updater to finally work. I tried about 3 different Mr. Fixits, no joy. Also windows updater trouble shooter package, still no luck. Went into the microsoft answer forum and sifted through all kinds of hints, helps, try this , try that etc.. and came across this one dudes posting suggesting change DNS sever address to 8.8.8.8 preferred and 8.8.4.4 alternate. I was using Open dns so I switched the numbers as I just mentioned and voila... :thumb: windows updater is back...like magic. lmao. Anyway am pressed for time and am going to look further into those dns settings and why they seem to work.. Thank you all for your help and advice. Peace over and out. :)

I wouldn't even pretend to know how to do that.
