Blocking ports 137 etc in router

    If you block ports in the router outgoing and incoming is this the same effect as blocking them in the software f/w?

    Your router, should by default, block inbound connections.(unless you have ports forward)
    For outbound, I prefer to block with application rules (if the installed firewall can do this). Blocking outbound at the router will force the software to start using other local ports in an attempt to complete the connection, untill timeout.

    I am dong a belt and braces approach. I do block in the s/w firewall. I was not sure if it was as secure in doing in the router alone and seems it is not.
