The new AVG Free 8.5 version is now available to all users!

Today, the Updates and Installation Files pages both show version 8.5.339 (dated May 15, 2009) as the current version. Fixes & Improvements.

Documentation - Present User Manual is version 8.5.4 (dated May 11, 2009).

Extra Protection - As you can see, AVG Free does not contain many of the features found in the AVG Paid, so it's mainly Basic Protection for your PC.

For background info, review this Wilders thread: AVG Free Upgraded to 8.5.278. This thread has been opened to continue the discussion on the now official 8.5 version series.

Since "8.5 Free" has been available for many months what do you mean by it's "official now"? What was it before? :cautious:

I think he means AVG Free SP1. His "Fixes & Improvements" link directs you to a web page which is titled "Program update AVG Free 8.5.339 SP1."

Victek123, although 8.5 had been available, the Updates page continued to show version 8.0.237, with a February 11th, 2009 date, as AVG's Official version for many months. The 8.5 versions were rolled out slowly, via Normal Update, due to the problems that AVG found along the way.

8.5.339 is the first version to show on that page and by now, I assume all AVG Free users have received it via Normal Update.

Seriously, it's just a name? Probably only so that it's easier to understand for those reading the release notes.

FYI. Today, the Installation Files page is showing version 8.5.364 (dated June 2, 2009), yet the Updates page is still showing version 8.5.339 (dated May 15, 2009).

No other info is available and this new version has not come via Normal Update at the time of this post.

ance, thank you! I see that the AVG Free Forum now has the info (last post): Re: AVG 8.5 FREE EDITION (8.5.364) / FIRST IMPRESSIONS - AVG 8.0 FREE.

I don't use the toolbar but wondering what that new toolbar is all about?

In my case, version 8.5.364 has not been supplied via Normal Update yet. If anyone reading this thread has seen it, please post with comments, especially if you use the toolbar.

dell boy, although I can't confirm it by providing a link (AVG Web site servers are acting weird at the moment), I believe that the Paid version does detect rootkits, however, the Free version does not.

Edit: Here's the Product Comparison page.

yes yes i know, thats what i was talking about, other antiviruses will provide the same thing with anti-rootkit, so avg is a definate no-goer until they put it in.

But you have to pay for other antiviruses  (except for Avira Personal)

I just got 8.5.374 via automatic update :)

    Don't forget Avast!. ;)

My experiences with Avast ARK are not really good, I found a hidden driver (with Avira) on a machine where Avast was installed :(

Edit: But let's get back to AVG Free - yes, you should also think about an anti-rootkit tool with AVG Free
