    I posted this on the AVG forum, but I've yet to ever have a response from them there...
    Maybe you guys can help!

    I use Thunderbird to manage an earthlink account and gmail account. AVG scans the earthlink emails, but not the gmail ones. I followed the FAQ instructions (quoted below) and set up a new AVG server according to the instructions, and reconfigured my email client server settings as well. With the new email client server settings I can not get my email. (I get the error mgs "cannot connect with server 127.0.0.1"). If I return to the regular email client server settings, I can receive email, but AVG does not scan it.

    Suggestions?
    Thank you.

    Windows Vista Home Premium
    AVG 8.0.233 database version 270.10.19/1939
    no other or prior antivirus
    Windows Defender and Windows Firewall
    Thunderbird 2.0.0.19
    Wireless/DSL - Qwest ISP
    Gmail and Earthlink email servers
    no spam filter installed on home computer - spam filtered by Gmail and Earthlink before downloading

    FAQ instructions followed:
    To set up AVG 8.0 Free Edition protection for e-mails on your Gmail account, please follow these steps:

    * open AVG - menu Tools - Advanced Settings - E-mail Scanner - Servers
    * go to POP3 - AutoPOP3, and edit this server:
    o Type of login: Fixed host; fill in your POP3 server and port (pop.gmail.com:995)
    o Local port: 5100
    o Connection: SSL (or SSL Default based on your e-mail services provider)
    o make sure that the server is activated
    * now go to SMTP - AutoSMTP, and edit the server:
    o Type of login: Fixed host; fill in your SMTP server and port (smtp.gmail.com:465)
    o Local port: 5200
    o Connection: SSL (or SSL Default based on your e-mail services provider)
    o make sure that the server is activated

    This way, the AVG E-mail Scanner is set up to communicate with the GMAIL server using SSL encryption. Now, please configure your e-mail client so that it connects to the AVG e-mail scanner instead of the actual e-mail server. The servers configuration will be:

    * POP3
    o server: 127.0.0.1
    o port: 5100
    o user name / password: same as before (i.e. your e-mail username and password)
    o encryption: NONE (SSL disabled)
    * SMTP
    o server: 127.0.0.1
    o port: 5200
    o authentication: yes
    o user name / password: same as before
    o encryption: NONE (SSL disabled)

    I had a similar problem with Norton some time ago and it was because gmail uses an encrypted connection and not many email scanners will scan an encypted connection, Kaspersky is one of the few.

    I hope that helps
