AVG 8.0 (free) update manager not working

I downloaded AVG (free version) update to version 8.0 when it came out and recently realized that the "update manager" is not working.

Whenever I start the program the update manager says "database update is disabled". No matter what settings I select and save, they disappear as soon as the program is closed and then reopened.

Is this a ploy to get us to buy their commercial version or is there something I am missing in getting the automatic updates function to work?

Thanks for the reply. I am using Windows XP and it is formatted NTFS.

I will try the fixes and if all else fails, may try another anti-virus program. AVG required me to uninstall my Roxio Easy CD creator and while I seldom use it anymore, I cannot understand why they did not work around a conflict with an older well known program.
