Antivirus Poll - 2011 (Jul - Dec)

Malwarebytes ain't a av. It should be run along side a av. Not alone

 

I haven't had an AV installed on any of my PCs for years. The last one I used was AntiVir, not sure if it was version 5 or 6. That said, I scan downloads at VirusTotal. The poll doesn't say that the AV has to be installed or local. My answer then is either none or all of them.

 

Still with Avast Free on my 2 main systems and common sense.
Been malware-free for 6 years since the change to Avast.

I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials on my other system just to test it out and so far I like it. Of coarse I don't believe it is as effective as Avast, since it has limited options. I also don't like the way that it updates definitions and it is a bit more resource heavier than Avast. However I believe Microsoft is doing an excellent job with it, much better than what I would expect.

On Windows machines I use either Microsoft Security Essentials, Symantec or Outpost Pro. That is how I voted.

Currently using Norton Internet Security 2011. It seems to be the only thing I have used this year that doesn't break something else though its tendency to delete files without asking is still annoying.

I also have licenses for Outpost Security Suite (not bad, a bit of work to set up, don't care for the ads in the main interface), ESET Smart Security (problems with Windows Updates, firewall blocking access to workgroup machines, and email timing out) and Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 (patch 'b' is taking too long and is really needed to fix some things).

Overall, still not 100% happy with any product.

 

That is the main reason why I won't use Norton products on my systems.
The false positives have got much worse than before and no matter how you add these files to Norton's exclusions, Norton still deletes them without asking.
Simply got tire of having to restore my safe files from the quarantine and having to disable real-time protection just to use them. This issue has been addressed since 2009 and Symantec refuses to listen. Reporting the false positives does no good either. It was so annoying that Norton 2011 didn't even last through its 15 day trial before I deleted it. What a nice way to run a business.

I voted for VIPRE. I use both the Standard (AV only) and Premium (suite) versions. It's light, easy to use, trouble-free and has received good reviews (though not by major testing organizations).

The AV has dropped a notch or two in importance for me in the last year or so.
Now that I have been using Sandboxie, I have rearranged my priorities as far as what security app is most needed. The AV doesn't have to be the major player that I once envisioned. Now I place more importance on other layers.

My approach to computer security is getting better all the time, and VIPRE is a keeper for me.

When I use an AV I alternate between Avira Premium and Norton 2011. I still prefer no AV real-time and rely heavily on Sandboxie to keep me out of trouble.

 

Other: Returnil System Safe Pro which should be listed as an option here even though the AV component is really only a part of the total, layered protection RSS offers.

Avast is just great and far ahead of all the others ATM , tried several solutions in the last week, there are good ones but heavy and buggy with lots of FP's, Avast in my case has zero FP's , performs very very light , offers great protection , what more can one need ?

"In my case" being the operative phrase.
I ran avast for a few years. I liked it very much. But during that time there were some humdinger FPs that, as I recall from reading the forums, caused some major problems for users. I wouldn't go so far as to say that avast has a reputation for being FP-prone, but I would say that the ones it has exhibited have tended to be hurtful to alot of users.

I'm glad to hear that your mileage has varied.

Avast/Eset. These two are just great. I'm staying between these two.

 

Still Avira 9 free. They supposed to stop supporting version 9 at the end of June but didn't happen. The updates keep coming

 

EAV RC, it is really very good and jmonge was right about its excellent detection. Eset, finally, hit a home run and is back to where they once where. I know I aint changing products ever, ever, again.

Actually the only other products that may interest me the rest of the year are Norton 2012 and Bitdefender 2012. Will I really stay with Eset? Depends on how their HIPS module evolves. If it aint user friendly, she goes.

1.Avast - Free and light on system resources

2.ESET - Lightest antivirus on system resources and removing every kind of threats without any problem

3.Kasoersky 2012 - Large footprint on older PC's only suitable for new PC's Not a good choice for gamers at all but massive improvements from version 2011 to 2012.bit hesitate to remove complex threats but instantly undo the changes made by malware.

4.Avira - It's free and not bad

5.Norton - Good on system resources but too much false alarms

 

Avira Internet Security 2012. It is running very light on my Toshiba Satellite.
