I'm running AntiVir Premium. I know certain AVs perform scans differently then others. Some scan all the files within the archive. Some just scan the archive. I just ran a full system scan with AntiVir Premium. It scanned only 22,628 files, and only took 12 minutes to do it. I've never had an AV scan that few files, and never had one scan so quickly. As an example, NOD32 would scan approximately 128,000 files in about 45 minutes.

I'm a little worried about whether AntiVir is doing it's job. I'm used to bigger numbers of files and longer scan times. Can this be a normal full system scan? My OS is XP Home/SP2, 40 Gig hard drive, if that matters.

Antivir is most likely not set to scan 'all files'.

What about setting it to scan all archive types?

What percentage of the hard drive is free? And is there more than one install option such as Typical and Custom?

Every time the scan starts, whether it's a scheduled scan or a manual scan, it starts at 59% complete mark. It scans the usual 22,000 files and that's it. I think I'm tired of AntiVir. Time to uninstall.

I know for a fact that some av applications will scan all files inside an archive,
but will only count the archive as 1 file (Norton is one of them).
So if you have 1 archive with 10.000 files inside it will just say '1 file scanned'.
I'm not sure if that's the case with AntiVir however.

Too bad really, as it is a great new scanner and there must be something wrong with the configuration.

    @ Graystoke

If your AntiVir starts scanning at 59% then there is something definately
wrong. It never happened to me once, maybe no one else experienced it
too. Why don't you perform a re-installation and check again. There might
be something wrong with the computer also. To uninstall completely, you'll
    find some tools here.

    @ pilotart

Booting in safe mode disables a lot of autostart programs, thats why we
get less warnings. Otherwise memory resident programs are locked so we
can't scan it. Please send the tagged HTML file to Avira so that they can
have a look at it and adjust the heuristic settings in case its a false alarm.

I uninstalled AntiVir. I ran the AntiVir registry tool, but all the files listed had the message "failed to delete". I ran two registry cleaners and then did a manual registry search for anything AntiVir. Nothing was found. I re-installed AntiVir. Still the same problem. The scan starts out at the 59% complete mark, scan 22,628 files, and that's it. Maybe AntiVir doesn't like my computer, or my computer doesn't like AntiVir. I guess I'll go back to using NOD32. Too bad, I was really liking AntiVir.

@ AMRX, I had immediately used the 'Send to AVIRA' icon on the Quarantine page and received aknowledgement, Also sent it to Stephen's Email for Hueristic analyisis. The Dell Support Utility was later removed for other reasons and a click on Re-Scan in Quarantine now shows clean, so I guess it was a FP.

@ Graystroke, AVIRA has a tool on their website to aid in complete removal, including registry entries. No idea why, but my System Scan progress bar always opens above 25% at start of scan. Both EWIDO and KASPERSKY OnLine Scans show perfectly clean since AntiVir has been running on my systems.

One False Positive in six months presents no problem for me and I shall keep the Hueristic settings on High.

AntiVir does NOT scan files that are in use by the OS.
That is why numbers are different. This was from there Forum.
I have to say I like AntiVir but its a very bad Design.
