Eset you have now marked version 6 as RC yet the anti theft part of eset is still very much lacking,

I have tested Prey Project alongside for a comparison , eset takes between 3-5 minutes to recover any information when testing, it managed the following:

    • Desktop Image
    • IP Address

Prey project has managed the following within the 3 - 5 minutes:

    • Desktop Image
    • Geo Location (got my next door neighbors address but very close)
    • IP Address
    • Laptops Spec
    • Uptime
    • Logged in user account
    • Full list of Wireless signals the machine can see

I dont understand the point in adding the anti-theft extras if they cant even provide enough information to find the device for a product someone is paying for im sure any consumer would expect better functionality than an open source freebie.

Anti-Theft data could improve malware tracking in LiveGrid, not just device tracking

1, geo location should be determined given that information about wi-fi networks in the neighborhood is available
2, laptops specification - I don't think it's necessary as the owner of the laptop should normally know what kind of laptop it was
3, uptime - I don't find this information necessary but I understand they could be useful for somebody. Will be added to the wish list.
4, information about logged in account - this should always be a so-called phantom account so I don't find this info useful.
5, list of wireless networks - this won't be possible as this information is not available from the service provider

IMO, Eset should reconsider to have another important feature to be included in its ESS 6, not Anti Theft but things like Sandbox and Virtual Keyboard

The service provider? That makes it sound as though it isn't only you who would be able to access the camera, grab screen shots, track the location and movement of the device, etc.

    Hello,

No, that is specific to the location data.

OK thanks, had to ask because I've heard that some "farm out" their anti-theft functionality. If I may ask a followup, would the client computer be periodically querying that location service provider regardless of whether or not it has been reported stolen or does the querying only begin after one has marked it as stolen?

    Hello,

My understanding is that no action is performed until a device is marked as stolen.

    Hello,

Anti-theft support for Linux is being looked into, however, I do not have any information about what form it would take or how it would be implemented.

    Regards,

    Aryeh Goretsky
