For my smaller hard disk(40 gb) the updates are instant.

That works well ur hard disk has relatively less data <160gb .FOr larger hard disk ,It takes around 10 seconds for updates. I am just searching for newer and faster alternative. When i found locate32 i tought none could be better than that. Now is there anything really better than "everything"?

CATCH:Everything works only for NTFS drives, But conversion to ntfs is easy , see thir FAQS.

You leave Avafind running in the background so it updates its database in real-time. No need to wait for an update.

Also, don't disregard the fact that it has built in options to act as a http/ftp server :]

Just try everything out for yourself. There's a zip download which will run without install.

I tried Avafind. It also seems good. Only thig is that it is not portable.

Can it be configured to just run smart scan on its launch instead of constantly running in background? Is there a nag?

If you set the index time small enough it will likely rescan everytime you start it. Why would you need this portable?
