I have several scheduled tasks that are full backups to an external (USB) hard drive. I used to include verification in the backup, but that made the backup take a long time to complete. Finally, I removed verification from the scheduled tasks, and performed it as a separate step.

I wasn't surprised that the backups took less time to complete, but what surprised me was how much faster it was to do the verification afterwards. Doing the backup and the verification separately takes less time than doing them together, thus 'addition by subtraction'. I'd be interested to know if others have had the same experience.

I have not noticed that behavior.

Does it only happen when you backup and validate to your external drive or does it also happen when you use an internal drive?

I'm assuming that the backup part took the same amount of time both ways.

What was the time difference on the validation?

Since it was a scheduled task, do you get the same time differences when you run the task manually? (Perhaps TI is running in low priority "background" mode on the validation?)

    Hi Bulldog 356,

You will get this effect if you are using the TI 11 backup Locations feature or for that matter a secure zone.
Both perform revalidations of the contents as a new backup is added and validated.
With Locations only the latest backup is validated if the validation is done as a separate operation.

Acronis have been in the picture regarding multiple validations at least since Version 8 and probably before. Perhaps one day it will be fixed......

    Thanks for your replies.

I actually don't use Backup Locations or the Secure Zone, since TI 11 still verifies all images when using those options.

I only notice this behavior with my USB hard drive (I also do backups to a second internal hard disk), and the time difference is a matter of minutes. The difference is typically 2 minutes when backing up only c: and 4 minutes when backing up the entire disk.

If you don't think the speed-up is coming from True Image I'll look elsewhere for a possible cause, but I won't look too hard because, after all, this is a good result.

    Hey MudCrab:

Different priorities in the scheduled tasks vs. a manually initiated verification. Thanks for the idea!
