I have spent the past several days trying to clean up my computer after a series of malicious viruses and adware programs were found. Norton Antivirus did a reasonable job of guiding me through the problems. But it hasn't helped me much with the biggy: MainSearch.

I followed Norton's suggestions re: the adware. I rebooted in Safe Mode more times than I care to remember and deleted every .dll file that Norton told me to erase. However, about:blank and a series of pop-ups indicating that I have some kind of spyware have been the only results. That's what led me to search for solutions using Google, which led me to your group.

As per your instructions, I have installed and run Spybot S&D. Rebooted. Then ran HijackThis. The log from that is listed below. Is there hope?

    Hi skizzlepop,

Before you fix anything could you mail me a zipped copy of C:\Documents and Settings\Wendy Conner\msopt.dll
Use the address in my profile please.

    Download and run: http://www.memorywatcher.com/uninst.exe
The program needs internet access to finish.

Then please unzip hijackthis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder in the folder it's in.
These easily get lost in a Temp folder.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

and use the DiskCleanup tool to empty all the Temp folders.

Post a new HijackThis log when you are ready. There will be more left to do.

    Pieter:

Thanks for getting back to me! Since I last posted, things have changed considerably -- and hopefully for the better. So, I wanted to tell you the latest before following your instructions.

Lavasoft updated its Ad-aware 6.0 software with a reference file (01R310 23.05.2004) created just two days ago. According to some accounts that I have read, the adware or malware installed on my and other people's computers is called "MainSearch" by Norton and "CoolWebSearch" by Ad-aware. Downloading Ad-aware 6.0 on my computer and then running the "web update" feature for the latest Ad-aware reference file installed the most up-to-date version of the program. Scanning the computer then deleting malicious files seems to have done away with the virus. My Internet Explorer now opens to the correct homepage, even after continual restarts.

There were, however, two entries for the CoolWebSearch in my registry, both of which I erased during my latest Ad-aware scan (conducted just minutes ago).

Furthermore, I have to type in entire domain names "http://www.nytimes.com" instead of simply "www.nytimes.com". I cannot find a means to reset this problem. My latest HijackThis code (generated after an Ad-aware scan) is listed below.

Thanks in advance for your help,

    skizzlepop

Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

    O13 - DefaultPrefix:
    O13 - WWW Prefix:
    O13 - Home Prefix: c:\searchpage.html?page=
    O13 - Mosaic Prefix: c:\searchpage.html?page=

    Reboot after fixing.

That should solve the problem. Please let us know.

And check for the entries I told you to fix before. Some of them are still present.

    Regards,

    Pieter & dave38:

I checked off the boxes that dave suggested. They worked, but I will also continue with Pieter's suggestions to get rid of the other files. In the meanwhile, Pieter, I sent you the .dll file you had requested. It was sent to your wildersecuity email account (I didn't see another email address) from my yahoo account. I hope that this is OK.

Here's the latest. And Pieter, did you get that .dll file via email?

    Pieter:

As soon as I read your email about the trojan file, Norton Antivirus warned me that I had been infected by a Trojan Horse with the file name c:\io.dll. AND the file that we had originally emailed about "msopt.dll" can no longer be found.I had to do a LiveUpdate of Norton, but it wasn't entirely successful. Some elements would not download correctly.

I ran Norton Antivirus anyway from Safe Mode. The results:

    wmplayer.exe.tmp -- deleted
    io.dll -- Quarantined

    Hi skizzlepop,

I did get your file. Thanks.

First make sure Windows and IE are fully updated.

Now, please download and unzip http://www.rokop-security.de/main/download.php?op=getit&lid=59

Close as many programs as possible and click *Desinfektion starten*
Your computer should reboot almost immediately. If nothing happens initiate the reboot yourself and let me know.

If the program works after the reboot it will start first and be displayed. End the program with the same button (different name)

Then run HijackThis again and check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\djele.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\djele.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\djele.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://best.omega-search.com/panel_search.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = c:\searchpage.html
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Then scan your computer with AdAware as described here:
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=15913

    Regards,

    Pieter

OK, I've followed all of the instructions, but the damn virus (or malware or adware) still seems to be there. There's a .dll file now called noemfa.dll that has appeared. What's going on here?!

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7

Any thoughts, guyso_O This thing refuses to go away. One person on another site suggested that this virus/adware/malware has a mother/pointer file that simply creates another dll file anytime the one dll file is found. Is that what's going on? This is my 6th day working on this problem! Arghhh!

    Hi skizzlepop,

I am afraid you ran into the wrong hiacker for a quick fix.

    Download http://tools.zerosrealm.com/dllfix.exe
Doubleclick it and install in folder of choice on the root drive, in your case C:\

1.Run start.bat and press option 1. 'output.txt' will be created in the folder

(note : it's best to post that report together with a HijackThis log in your topic, so experts can have a look as well)

    2. IF hidden dll was successfully found, run start.bat again and choose option 2. Hit '1' and enter dll name manually.

    3. If dll was not found after first running start.bat :

Run start.bat again and choose option '2'. You must reboot after doing so.

    4. Download and run AdAware : http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ (make sure you have latest updates) and run it.

    5. Ask for a new hijackthis log, a new output.txt after the fix

    6. You can also run CWShredder finally to clean up other entries

    Regards,

    Pieter

OK, Pieter, things are looking much better. I did every single thing that you suggested. The hijackthis info is below. The output.txt is attached to this post. Plus, I ran CWShredder, and it seems to have done its job. What do you think? Thanks for your patience!

    Hi skizzlepop,

If you sucessfully got rid off:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\HLPDL.DLL

Then all you need to do now is: check the following item in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D6F23232-3C1C-419C-9D57-9CE41B5C16FA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\noemfa.dll (file missing)

    No immediate reboot required.
Please read How did this happen and can I prevent it?

    Regards,

    Pieter

dllfix has NOT gotten rid of the HLPDL.DLL file. Because of that, I haven't yet gotten rid of:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D6F23232-3C1C-419C-9D57-9CE41B5C16FA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\noemfa.dll (file missing)

What should I do from here? Is there a way to manually override and delete that dll file?

    Pieter:

I got a little confused using the instructions on that recommended page. I dowloaded and ran the Find-all.bat. But that only reconfirmed the name of the dll file. I also tried to make sense of the removal and delete file instructions, but I wasn't sure if I could follow them without a Windows disk.

I don't know why, but our computer didn't come with a Windows CD. It does, however, have a disk titled "Toshiba: Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD". Is that at all useful?

No not at all. I think that DVD wil return your computer tyo the state it was in after you purchased it.

You will need to create boootdisks:

The most important part is to get rid of C:\WINDOWS\System32\HLPDL.DLL

Boot your computer from the disks and do that first.
The rest is a matter of cleaning up using AdAware and CWShredder.

    Regards,

    Pieter

So close to finished! How, exactly, do I use the boot disks? I tried entering the system using them, but I didn't know which way to go to eliminate the final few files. Is it the Recovery Console? I read something vague about that. Is it through some kind of DOS prompt?

I looked at other places in the forum, but I couldn't undestand what to do next.

OK, I was able to uncover how to use the Recovery Console BUT it still didn't work.

Access was denied, according to the prompt.

    How should I proceed?

    :D

Wow! This is very exciting! I was finally able to figure out how to use the Recovery Console, and it did its job! My computer appears to be clear of the virus/adware. I ran both an Ad-aware and CWShredder check, and everything showed up just peachy. So I think that things are clear.

As you have instructed others to do, Pieter, I will also visit that link about future protection to ensure that everything.

I spent a few minutes summarizing information that you had passed on to others with regards to the Recovery Console. This is meant to clarify the steps for those with questions. I hope that it helps!

Here were the steps I took for Recovery Console:*
    --------------------------
    1. I created Windows XP startup disks (6 floppies in all)
    2. I booted up my computer using the disks.
    3. I started the Recovery Console -- pressing R
    4. I pressed 1 to start the Recovery Console
    5. I had no Admistrator password, so I hit enter.
    6. I typed ATTRIB -r-s-h c:\windows\system32\hlpdl.dll to set file permissions
    7. I typed del c:\windows\system32\hlpdl.dll to delete my dll file
    --------------------------
*Note: the troubling file in my computer was named hlpdl.dll, but that is specific to my computer. Others should run CWShredder to determine which file is causing their CoolWebSearch problems.

    Hi skizzlepop,

Congratulations on a job well done. :)
You are now such an expert in this field that I have to ask you a question.

I am not sure what you meant by this. Does CWShredder report the hidden dll?

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Pieter:

I cannot remember if CWShredder identified the file. Unfortunately, the program doesn't keep a log so I cannot tell you for certain. HOWEVER, I do know that dllfix identified the file, which made using Find-All redundant. At least it did in my case.

By the way, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!! You are the MAN, and I hope that you either get paid for working for this organization, or this somehow helps you in another way. You and the rest of the members of this forum are saints!

I have increased many of the security features in my computer now, based on the link suggested, and things look much better. If you have any other questions, please let me know how I can help. Thanks! :D
