Firewall in Webroot SecurityAnywhere Antivirus

Hi all,

is it normal that WSA antivirus firewall section does not provide any control on allowing/blocking application from communications? I can't see the controls anymore.

No so it's time to do a clean reinstall to see if it returns or try a reboot first?

Btw, this is my firewall section in the AV only version.

 

Not that I'm aware of but the WSA uninstaller should remove everything then reboot and reinstall.

Very strange unless Joe missed telling us something in which I doubt also notice the average scan times.

Scan time may be related to its first scan (just after install) and speed of the system. I think the latest build has answered to some complaints about the firewall in AV version (sigh! ).

 

You can send in a support ticket to let them know or wait for Joe to see what he has to say?

This is by design on Windows 8 as the firewall controls are somewhat limited by the OS. We'll be extending this further but the OS does a very good job at firewall by itself.

I was just getting ready to submit a ticket about no pop-ups allow/deny from the firewall in WRSA on Windows 8 which I have posted about before. I am assuming that this means it is acknowledged that this is not working on Windows 8 since these options no longer appear in the WRSA settings for the firewall? If this is indeed the case, I again assume I do not need to submit a ticket? Thanks as always...

 

Yes I see now that the Firewall is different in my 2 VM's Win 8 32bit & 64bit I didn't even look at the firewall after all these months with the Win 8 Beta's and the RTM.

So, if I understand it correctly, WSA protection capabilities are limited in Windows 8 for now.

Perhaps it should be written somewhere as release notes or so (obviously in a way that doesn't "alarm" the buyers) so that the customers already using it in previous OSes which are thinking about upgrading to Win8 (since WSA is stated as Fully compatible) knows that waiting a little more could be wise.

 

I don't know if this is about win8 32 or 64 bit but keep in mind MS has "improved" Patchguard in Win8 and it is now a lot more restrictive than before so probably all security products will be more limited, even if the vendors don't tell you about it. Normal AV scanning probably won't be hindered but features that are more dependent on kernel access such as sandboxing, anti-logging, HIPS, self-defense etc have the most difficulties with the new patchguard.

 

WSA's protection abilities are just as strong as they are on other OSs - it is the custom management of individual applications which is different in this case, a technical feature which isn't required (and the OS duplicates the same functionality).
