First I need you to know that I am not that great on technical computer terminology, or any technology for that matter.
I downloaded Spyware Blaster 2.6 three days ago. Downloaded it and loved it. However I still had a few issues that I needed to take care of (spyware ), I thought it was spyware that was driving my CPU to 100% and then shutting my system down. So I finally took the time to "HighJack This" scanned (1st I rebooted ), found the items that were (I thought and another tech thought) were the problems, and then "fix it". Now that I have (or hope) all the spyware cleaned out and no detectable viruses, I tried to turn spyware blaster back on. And what I get is, it tries to open HP RecordNow. It says: The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource and unavailable.
It also has a dropbox that gives you a choice between c:\hp\tmp\src\ or 1.
The worst of it, I can't turn on Spyware Blaster and my CPU is still at 100%. In which it will probably shut down anytime now.

    Hi DenaLuu,

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O9 - Extra button: MktBrowser (HKLM)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: MarketBrowser (HKLM)

Then reboot and see if you can find the SpywareBlaster.exe
    Most likely in C:\Program Files\SpywareBlaster\spywareblaster.exe

Doubleclick it and let us know what happens then.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Sorry it took so long to reply back. I eliminated the two that you recommended. And still my CPU is running at 100% and I also removed all spyblaster files and redownloaded, and it still link its self to HP RecordNow. It says the say thing as above. Also ran another virus scan and nothing detected. Ugh..... I am as a complete loss now.. Thank you for all your help. I dont know what I would do without these forums...
Here is another Hijackthis log just in case you spot something else that I may have missed.
    Thanks,
    Denaluu

    Hi DenaLuu,

Can you tell us which process is using up most of the CPU ?
You should also install (at least) SP1 for IE since that will replace a lot of system files and may help to cure your problem.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Shoot this is aggravating, I had just finished typing all this information, them bam it shuts down.
I downloaded SP1 last year. After I updated in Sept., one of the hotfix (SP1) would run my internet speed at 115kpbs, then it would shut down. So I went on the Microsoft forum and questioned this, someone mentioned it was one of the hotfixes, that I should remove this paticular hotfix ( I cant remember the Q#). Which I did and everything went back to normal. In Novemeber I read that they updated SP1, that they fixed a few glitches. So I redownloaded it (hoping this was fixed), and it did the same thing. I then removed it (or at least the portion that will allow me to, without the saying it would alter these programs). Now I have a ton of hotfixes (SP1) on my add/remove programs, that are duplicated from the first time I downloaded it. I thought it would only download the portions that I needed on my system. Wrong... I was going to remove them all and then start over, but it says that if I remove these programs that it will alter what I have now. So I am not sure what to do here.. Does this make any sense, I sure hope so.

As for my CPU, it goes back and forth from explorer.exe and system idol. It mainly shuts down when explorer.exe is running high.
I guess you should know that I have a HP w/ XP, 1.3 GHz, 256 SDRAM memory, 40.0GB.

Thanks once again and many more, you are a blessing.............

    Hi DenaLuu,

Could you copy and paste the text in bold into your IE addressbar and post the results that get displayed:
    javascript:navigator.userAgent

    Hi DenaLuu,

That is what I was looking for, yes. Not what I feared to find. :)

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

Done... explorer.exe is still running high (71). :'(...

Any ideas on what I can do about SP1?

Also I removed spyblaster and all the files. Before I try and download it again is their anything I can do in order for it not to go to HP RecordNow?

    Thanks Pieter

    Hi DenaLuu,

While you are logged on as an administrator, click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
    Navigate to this key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify.

Quit Registry Editor, and then install Internet Explorer 6 following these instructions:

    http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html

    That should solve that problem.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Pieter,

1st I went into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} then I right-clicked the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify. When I click on modify, a screen popped up asking me the value. It was set as 1, is that correct?

I also installed ie1setup.exe. Without any problems... YAYAYAYAAAA. Does that cover me completely for SP1?
But my CPU is still at 100%, explorer.exe still running around 72.

    Thank you many times over,
    Dena

    Hi DenaLuu,

I forgot to add that the value for IsInstalled had to be set to 0.

    Sorry about that

Could you post a new log, so I can see if you were successfull?

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Pieter,

I changed the value to 0.

Then I rebooted my computer so I can have an accurate hijackthis log. When my system can up I received a message that Internet Explorer 6 has been removed. Do you want to remove the files? I clicked no. Do you have any idea why it would do that? and what I can do to prevent this from happening again? :'(

Here is a recent hijack log..

One more thing I forgot to mention, I am still unable to open Spyblaster. It still opens up as HP RecordNow. I had uninstalled, cleaned all files, scan disk, defrag prior to reinstalling. o_O

    Best Regards,
    Dena :'(

    Hi DenaLuu,

Could you describe exactly what you did with SP1, because it still is not installed properly. Since I have a feeling it is (at least a big) part of your problem, I would like to see that resolved first.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Downloading alone is not enough. Did you follow the instructions at the broomeman site?

    MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2600.0000)

The strange thing is, it says SP1 but the version number is stuck at 0000 where SP one has 1106

When you click Help > About in IE, does it show SP1 there?

    Regards,

    Pieter

Is it just me, or has no one noticed the ever changing R1 Proxy statement? I have noticed a similiar pattern of activity on my own machine but have not been able to figure it out.

For example, does SpyGuard mormally use localhost:1189 as the address for updates? I've noticed that recently alot of localhost:port traffic. Just chasing leads......

    Thanks

    DenaLuu Guest

The version I downloaded is 6.0.2800.1106, at least thats what is says when I look into the properties.

I followed the instructions to the T. The only problem that I had is I added the recommended folder and I wasnt accurate on the folder name the first time around. Once I corrected the folder name their were no more issues, it went exactly as the websites notes.

As for your question: When you click Help > About in IE, does it show SP1 there? I am not sure where you are speaking of. Everything I tried I am unable to locate anything that will show me this. I did go into Windows Update last night to see if it still says that I need this critical update or service pack and it still says that I do. I hope this answers your question.
As I was typing this I thought I am going to double check what Window Update says now, well it no longer says that I need that service pack, so I am assuming that its is thereo_Oo_O?

But CPU is still at 100% ( explorer.exe).
Also any thoughts on Spyware Blaster?

    Regards,
    Dena

Would it be possible for you to uninstall and then reinstall the HP RecordNow software? (i.e. Do you have a CD for it, or can you download it from the HP site?)

    That might fix the conflict.

    Best regards,
