Hey guys. I noticed on Softpedia HMP had only 3 stars, as they said they couldn't remove anything without paying. I emailed them and told them they should try the trial, because it is a great product and deserved a better review.

I got a response a week ago saying they would look into it, and I checked today, and it got a new review! 4.5/5 :thumb:

I just couldn't help notice the disjunction between the review made now, and the comments (19) going back to September 2006. The product then, compared to now...like chalk and cheese!

HMP has come a long way since then...no doubt vastly improved, to handle the malware of today. ;)

Reviews are one thing, as you know. We all read them, and often seek them out. Some people rely upon them more than others do.
But the real clincher, the real deciding factor, is personal experience.
That happened to me a month ago with HMP.
A friend had called, his office computer was in real bad shape.
Lots of programs would not start, everything was VERY sluggish, lots of erratic behavior.
He had NIS installed, but it was inaccessible, it would not open, and kept trying unsuccessfully to do some sort of auto-fix thing. It was a broken suite.
    I installed HitmanPro.
It found a variant of TDL rootkit, a boot kit, and ZeroAccess rootkit.
And cleaned them all on a reboot.
Next thing you know, NIS was able to download and install definitions and run a scan, which it was unable to do with the infections present.
HitmanPro... worth its weight in gold.
If you take any mental image away from this story, make it be this one...
I wish you could have seen NIS struggling so ineffectively with this malware, and how easily HMP installed and cleaned it out.
    So impressive. :thumb: :D

If realtime is coming I think it will be in v4.0, not in 3.7, they already said they're working on 4.0 and with a new feature like that it makes way more sense for a major version number bump.

Ah that makes perfect sense. You're absolutely right. Waiting for version 4.0 with realtime, hopefully.:D:thumb:

I thought the lure of HMP was to shadow an AV on demand and find what the AV might have missed. If it runs real time won't it violate the idea to never run two AV's real time together, or if we're already running MBAM real time? :)

Well many cloud AVs seem to violet that rule nowadays. Why not the multicloud engine HMP follow through? And I'm sure Erik and Mark would make HMP compatible and even complementary when and if they decide to release HMP as realtime AV.;)

Thats why i use it, i think surfright would be shooting themselves in the foot if they make HMP a full AV with realtime protection for a couple of reasons. First of, they would not have the distinct advantage of being a second opinion scanner that seeming will co-exist with almost any security product IME, when/if HMP went down that road they would be the one with it's octopus arms everywhere making other products stumle.

The advantage of "just" being an effective second opinion product is that we're most likely to view HMP positively for "all that it catches", instead of "all that it misses" becoming a negative. We're much more like to hold HMP in high regard for seemingly catching "anything" our AV misses IMHO.

I hope HMP do not march down that road personally and if they do i would hope they would never discontinue HMP like it is now....a basic, but very effective extra tool that i have purchased licenses for. :)

I partially agree with you. I think that they should make if real time scanning. Also to integrate Alert to the product as well. They should also keep the on-demand scanner as well. A lot of folks just want the added convenience of having a second change scanner. I'm sure they would love to get in the cloud AV market. Seeing that folks already use cloud AV's, it could only help their market. I think that if they added Alert and made it real time cloud scanning, a lot of people would use it. Just my two cents. I'm sure others will have an opinion.

If they used Emsisoft's model; free removal, paid real-time protection, I would be stoked.

Even if it wasn't a companion AV that would be fine, given it uses 5 engines, with 2 having near 100% detection rates. It would be able to stand on its own.

I've noticed the video game anti-cheat service PunkBuster is often flagged by HMP as suspicious. While this doesn't surprise me, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what exactly PB does that is suspicious?
