I'll let you know reference to vista as thats what I run & I'm going to install all but the spam portion & see how it goes. However that won't be for another couple hours as I'm still at work. If it works for XP I'll let my wife run my license than as she hates the slowness of F-secure on 768 mem, she's use to Kaspersky v6 which she though was fast....

After 2 weeks I seem to have finally cracked the loss of DNS after installing AVG 8 on my two Vista systems. During installation I went to Custom Installation and installed the AVG Firewall module, hey presto everything works!!

Its been almost 3 hrs now since installing AVG this time round and after a handful of reboots everything is still working great!

Strange how opting not to install the Firewall which incidentally is the default option on the Network Edition can cause such a problem.

After using Avg Pro 7 for a long time, it amazes me, that a product has been changed so much, that it seems to give too many problems for a lot of users and I wonder why the changes are so drastic. Same with Nod, all of a sudden a complete new product with way too many problems!

I can't say I have problems other than the recent one with the red mark in the icon that for me has been fixed. As a matter of fact it's running quite well right now along with Mamutu and SuperAntiSpyware. However, there is just something about this new version that as much as I like it, I'm not sure I care to keep it. Does this make sense? I mean my constant changing of programs aside, I thought I would end of sticking with this version as I always liked AVG and it was quickly improving in detection. Now for some reason I'm more interested in the new version of Avast that's coming out which also includes an Antispyware and RootKit scanner than I am with AVG8.0, and would rather run a stand alone FireWall. Maybe if I could use the WebShield and Linkscanner without any noticeable browser slowdowns it would help. Maybe it's just so different in appearance than the old version that I just need time to adjust? LOL. Anyone else like this version, but feel it's just missing something?

doesn't work here & I'm running vista, it's off & I won't try it again, it's like nothing is different from the old version...

Thanks for your response maddawgz. I like AVG 8.0 as well, and like I said maybe I just have to get use to the new look. I do wish I could run WebShield and LinkScanner though, but it slows down my browsing. Does it slow down yours at all?

How I fixed the Watchdog issue

This is how I fixed the Watchdog issue:

Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections > right click Local Area connection > Properties > Disable Internet Protocol Version 6

No more Watchdog alert (maybe AVG is having trouble sending the Watchdog verification through both protocols)

you should be able to run it with those 2 items, to run it crippled like that is unacceptable IMHO, they need to fix it & also if you turn off link scanner have it NOT give a red mark in the icon in the systray. It was suppose to be updated but I saw nothing different, disappoiting. In fact IMO it runs a bit heavier than previous AVG products. It seems to follow all the releases here lately, sloppy & half done, when you paying money you should get more than a released beta...

You've got a very valid point there larryb52.People are paying to run betas and that just doesn't seem right:'(

Disabling modules in order to have it run properly, no way....I'll never go for that option. It either works and does what it is made for, or it does not and I'll pass it on.
It's beginning to look like a normal policy.......push out half-built programs and let the user figure out what's good and what's no good. It's a cheap way of producing software without proper testing.

I think it's a sad commentary of todays software in general but when you think about it being security software to protect you PC that's worse than sad.

    Hi,
since i made a re-installation with 8.0.85 (ex 8.0.81) it seems that it runs really better.
With the older version, i hade a slower i-net and more cpu usage.
Maybe they changed some important things, anyone with the same impression?
So far since 2 days, absolutly great, big difference (for my sytem).

    regards,
    Soul

For me, it made no difference at all. I hoped for a change with 8.0.85, but no.....

Well said larryb52, in this thread and in the previous ones.
Even though I still have a license for 7.5 I started searching for alternatives now.
This 8 version was just to frustrating and is not going back on my computer.
    AVG----you lose this time.

You know, I just installed the newest version of PC Tools Free AV and it's running great. I have also used their firewall and ThreatFire without troubles. My point is for free these 3 make a nice security set up that while perhaps not as effective as AVG, still offer half decent protection. True each has had its problems, but again they are all free. For what Grisoft is asking for their products I truly expect it to be trouble free. I like 8.0 and it didn't run bad for me. But not being able to use the Web Shield and LinkScanner plus needing a Program Update right away, has left a bad first impression of it for me. It must be mentioned again however, that problems seem to almost be the norm with many new releases of security software today. At least for free it doesn't frustrate me as much though. I will add that as far as paid programs go. I now have an even greater appreciation for SuperAntiSpyware.

I am getting ready to try the latest release of 8.0 and I have just one question please.
What is the difference between the two files that are offered?
The two available are as follows.
avg_ipw_stf_en_8_85a1274.exe 49.6 MB (Under Recommended Download)
avg_ipw_stf_all_8_85a1274.exe 59.6 MB (Under Installation Files)
I will install the recommended download, but I was just curious as to the other larger file.
    Thank You

I have noticed a difference from newer version too

Can anyone tell me what the "warnings" are.
I have about 50 of them in hlm/software/microsoft/active x/ with a whole bunch of numbers after them
most of them say adware- those i deleted
but it found a bunch of trojans and downloaderss and keyloggers as warnings not as infected items.

They are all sitting in the virus vault and I sent them to avg but does anyone know what these are?

I never saw this on avg 7.5 and all my antispyware programs are not seeing any of this. Are these false positives?

here are some examples: note there are no infections as per the program

I am going to make a guess and say _en_ is English language only and the larger file _all_ has a bunch of languages.

Personally, I'd just ignore them. If it's part of the spyware protection from SB - no need for AVG to eat it.
