I just found this tip and thought I'd pass it along: Fix High CPU Usage & Perfomance of Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender Phil
That is rather interesting, indeed. If that is the case, then I would have to say that Microsoft has created their own flaw there as far as performance goes.
Good for you, the reason why I replaced WD on 10 was just because of this. Several other people mentioned it over the time as well.
A few months ago I installed MSE on Windows XP because of comments on here about how "light" MSE supposedly is. The impact on the system was so noticeable that I immediately uninstalled it. I am tempted to reinstall MSE to see if this tweak makes any difference. Phil

@Macstorm : I know exactly what you mean. In real life, stalkers are prosecuted and sentenced. And compulsive behavior are treated. In tech forums however, it's apparently considered to be a cute hobby. I'm unable to understand why any individual dedicates their life to spreading bile. Life should be lived with a smile instead. So here is one from me :
I agree 100%. We should all respect one another's opinions. By the way, I have appreciated, benefited, and learned from many of your posts. So I thank you for that.
Thank you very much, @WildByDesign. You are one of the users here, who I always enjoy reading posts from. Your always helpful posts in every thread you show up in, are a perfect example of how forums ought to run. I have a lot of respect for that.
@Martin_C Thank you, Martin. That made my day, without a doubt. I don't always have the same deep level of technical knowledge as many of the other helpful members here, but one thing that is for sure is that I will always be happy to give some of the time that I do have available to help other members on subjects that I am able to help with. The reality is, I had learned so much here at Wilders even back as far as 10+ years when I did not have an account at the time. So now is my time to pay pack what was provided to me earlier on. It's the community aspect which I enjoy and appreciate most about forums such as Wilders.
I did have a bit of a problem with memory and CPU usage with MSE version 4.8.204 upon install but it subsided after a few days after I used the OP's suggested fix. However, with the current version 4.9.218.0, have no problems with CPU or memory WITHOUT the afore mentioned fix. Well satisfied. P.S. I do use my seatbelts and airbags activated while driving.
