Some info in this closed thread: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/f-lux-better-lighting-for-your-computer.350001/
it's a software to reduce the glare of the monitor. otherwise, you have to use a pair of sunglasses if you wake up at night and decide to use your computer. Dark Screen does not work on Windows 8.1. it says "Not compatible with WinNTx" when trying to install. edit: it installed fine in Compatibility mode. i like this better than f.lux because it does not give an orange hue to the monitor, but simply reduce the brightness. tnx for suggesting Dark Screen folks!
I will say this! It's been part of my desktop for many years both on the old XP and my home built x64 W7 SP1.
One of the first thing after booting I click on the battery icon of my laptop - Adjust screen brightness. Then I minimize & use as needed.
WARNING! i just submitted Dark Screen to VirusTotal and 16 out of 51 anti-virus engines flag it as malware. that's quite high. ~ Removed VirusTotal Results as per Policy ~ i will remove this from my computer and restore a disk image.
I wouldn't panic. If you check which AVs detected it and their detection description, it looks more like FPs. It might have some adware embeded as some have detected.
16 out of 51 anti-virus engines flagging it as malware is outside of my comfort zone. i just restored a disk image from before i installed it. i guess i should've scanned it *before* i installed it.
I tested an executable darkscreen.exe and it got only 1/53 detection, so the problem lies in installer. I installed it in VirtualBox and didn't notice any adware activity nor adaware being embedded or offered during installation.
I noticed this too years ago. I didn't run the installer on my real computer. I mentioned this in the linked thread.
tnx Mr Brian for helping me out! maybe it's flagged as malware because of the way the installer works? i remember a few years ago problems with some installers that used a particular 'packing', can remember the name atm...
