YouTube's live TV streaming service is expanding its coverage as it continues to invest against big cable.
YouTube TV will be available in 195 markets in the US. The company says its service will now cover 98 percent of US households.
Google hasn't disclosed subscriber numbers, but it reportedly had 800,000 paying subscribers as of July.

Cord-cutting services are starting to look a lot more like the services they replaced when it comes to price.
After price bumps in the past couple months hit Hulu Live and DirecTV NOW, YouTube TV is now also seeing a pretty substantial $10-$15 monthly price hike for users, though the new pricing will come with some new content thanks to a Google partnership with Discovery.

For “a limited time only,” YouTube TV is offering a two-week free trial instead of the usual one-week duration. Droid Life spotted the longer-than-usual free trial. Sadly (but predictably), this is only for new customers and won’t do you much good if you’ve already tried and canceled YouTube TV.

The fine print reveals that this promo will run from today until August 14th.
he service is tied to your Google account, so I’m not sure it’d be worth the trouble of setting up a new email for another free run.
YouTube TV remains my favorite of the live TV streaming services, but at $49.99 per month it’s really approaching the ceiling that I’m willing to pay. Hopefully it doesn’t rise any higher in the near future.

YouTube TV, Google’s paid TV streaming service, is now available on Amazon’s Fire TV platform. In a blog post, Amazon announced that the service is available now on a wide range of its streaming sticks and streaming boxes, and it can also be found on “Fire TV Edition” smart TVs, which have the Fire TV operating system built in.
After a price hike that Google announced back in April, YouTube TV now costs $50 a month.

As of April this year, YouTube TV includes over 70 live channels around the US, which cover sports, news, entertainment, and films. The latest channels to be added to YouTube TV were Discovery’s lineup, including the Discovery Channel as well as HGTV, Food Network, and TLC. Other networks available on YouTube TV include CNN, ESPN, and FX.

YouTube Premium lets viewers download videos for offline viewing, as well as background playback. It also offers ad-free playback experience across YouTube which means users can watch videos without hassle.

To receive the three-month trial, users cannot have used YouTube Premium in the past. However, they will still be eligible for a one-month trial if they have previously used YouTube Premium. Watching PBS live without cable no longer requires an antenna or access to Locast. More than 100 PBS member stations are now streaming through YouTube TV, Google’s $5- per-month channel bundle.

PBS says that the launch covers more than 75% of U.S. households and that more stations will come online next year. The channels appear to support both DVR and on-demand programming, and there’s a live feed for PBS Kids in addition to the main local feed.
The launch has been a long time coming for PBS, which has been talking about joining live TV streaming services such as YouTube TV for over a year.

YouTube today sent out emails to customers who are subscribed to its YouTube TV service through Apple's App Store, letting them know that ‌App Store‌ subscriptions are going to be discontinued in March.

From the emails:You're currently subscribed to YouTube TV through Apple in-app purchases, so we're writing to let you know that, starting March 13, 2020, YouTube TV will no longer accept payment through Apple in-app purchases. [...]
You'll be billed for one final month of service and then your in-app purchase subscription will be canceled automatically on your billing date after March, 13, 2020.
There's no word on why YouTube is ending YouTube TV subscriptions through the ‌App Store‌, but Apple does take a cut of all subscription purchases, so avoiding in-app purchases will allow YouTube to skirt that fee.

Apps that offer subscriptions on Apple's platform have complained about Apple's cut for years. Some apps raise their subscription prices through the ‌App Store‌ to compensate for the fee, while others choose not to offer subscriptions in Apple's apps.

On Thursday YouTube TV announced that subscribers would lose access to Fox regional sports networks and the YES network because it couldn't reach a new deal with their owner, Sinclair Broadcasting [...]
Now the deadline of February 29th has arrived, and the channels are still on.

Per the Team YouTube Twitter account, the two companies have arranged an extension while they keep working on a new deal, so we'll have to wait and see if this arrangement lasts or whether the carriage dispute actually leads to some blacked-out channels.

If you were worried about your favorite Fox regional sports channels disappearing from YouTube TV, you may be in luck.
YouTube TV and Sinclair Broadcast Group have reached an agreement to keep 19 of the 21 sports channels on YouTube TV. But the platform will drop Fox Sports Prime Ticket and Fox Sports West, which carry games from Los Angeles-area teams. It's also dropping the Yankees' YES Network.

"We value our ongoing relationship with YouTube TV, however, we are deeply disappointed with its decision to not carry certain RSNs," Sinclair's senior VP and general counsel David Gibber said in a statement. "We offered competitive market terms but, ultimately, YouTube TV declined."

YouTube and ViacomCBS have revealed an expanded, multi-year distribution deal that will add 14 new networks to the tech giant’s YouTube TV service.

The agreement will keep CBS broadcast stations, CBS Sports Network, Pop TV, Smithsonian Channel and The CW on the bundle and also add BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1 in the summer. At a later point, another batch of networks joining a premium tier will include ET Her, MTV2, Nick Jr., NickToons, TeenNick and MTV Classic.
Premium subscription services, including Showtime’s streaming service, will also be offered through YouTube TV under the deal as well as broader promotions across other parts of YouTube.

Along with Hulu’s live pay-TV offering and Sling TV, it is one of the more viable attempts to offer a pay-TV experience over the internet, without a contract or equipment.

Back in April of last year, YouTube TV raised its monthly fee to $49. The cord-cutting subscription will soon cost $64.99 for all.

That new price goes into effect today for new members. Existing subscribers will have “changes reflected in their subsequent billing cycle on or after July 30.” According to Google, this $15 jump reflects the “rising cost of content.”

We don’t take these decisions lightly, and realize how hard this is for our members. That said, this new price reflects the rising cost of content and we also believe it reflects the complete value of YouTube TV, from our breadth of content to the features that are changing how we watch live TV.
No further details were provided today, but hopefully this lets users pick and choose what channels they want and not deal with the increasing bloat.

YouTube TV customers are losing 19 Fox regional sports networks owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group as of Thursday, after Google and the broadcaster couldn’t reach terms on a renewal.

Starting Oct. 1, 2020, the Fox-branded RSNs will no longer be available on YouTube TV, according to Google. In February, Google had negotiated an extension with Sinclair to continue providing the RSNs through the end of MLB, NHL and NBA 2020 seasons. Now that those leagues’ regular seasons are over, “that extension is expiring,” YouTube TV said Tuesday.

“To bring you 85+ channels, we periodically renegotiate contracts with content owners,” YouTube TV said in a Twitter thread announcing the drop of Fox RSNs.
“This was a difficult decision made after months of negotiations. We hope we can bring Fox RSNs back in the future.”

At the end of September, a dispute with Sinclair cut off YouTube TV’s deal for Fox regional sports networks across the country, and as October comes to an end it’s also dropping Boston network NESN. NESN broadcasts games for the Red Sox and Bruins, as well as local college sports.

An first reported by The Streamable, an email just went out to subscribers notifying them of the change, saying “Unfortunately, we were unable to reach a new agreement to continue offering you this network. Starting Saturday, October 31st, 2020, NESN will no longer be available on YouTube TV, and you will no longer have access to any previous recordings from NESN.”

In a statement posted to Twitter, NESN described its side claiming that “Despite offering our most favorable rates and terms for carriage, YouTube TV chose to deny fans our top-rated programming on October 30th.”

In a wide-ranging interview today, YouTube chief product officer Neal Mohan talked about YouTube TV and how no price hike is coming soon.

The Verge‘s Nilay Patel on the Decoder podcast asked Mohan a few questions about YouTube TV as part of a broader interview on platform monetization. The YouTube executive was directly asked about the ballooning price of the cord-cutting service and how it’s “going back up towards the price of a standard cable bundle.”

The exchanged ended with Mohan saying, “there’s not another price hike or anything in the near term.” The last one to $64.99 occurred just over a year ago. That $15 jump from $49.99 was quite significant for many users. That occurred a year before in April for all users after Google stopped “grandfathering” early customers. At launch, the service cost $35, but that increased to $40 in February of 2018 for new sign-ups.

Of course, there’s no specific time range for “near team,” but it’s possible there will be no YouTube TV price hike this year.

NBC today threatened to pull its channels from YouTube TV next week if a new contract is not signed. Google this evening issued its response, and said YouTube TV would see a $10 price drop if the NBCU channels disappear.

In this evening’s statement, Google notably directed customers to:

“…sign up for NBC’s own direct-to-consumer streaming service, Peacock, which they offer for $4.99/month to continue watching NBCU content, such as Sunday Night Football.”
While this dispute went public, Google says it’s “still in active conversations with NBCU and are hopeful we can get past this impasse to keep their content available on YouTube TV.”

Just under an hour before the deadline, an NBCUniversal spokesperson issued the following statement to 9to5Google:

According to a source familiar with the talks, Google and NBCU are finalizing their agreement and the NBCU-owned networks will not be going dark on YouTube TV. Their previous agreement was set to expire Sept. 30 at midnight ET, but the parties reached a short-term extension while they continued working to hammer out a long-term deal.

It’s unclear if NBCU’s new deal for YouTube TV will bundle Peacock Premium as part of the internet-TV service, as NBCU was asking.

Now that I think of it, weird that Google doesn't fully compete with the likes of Netflix and Prime Video, I mean it has plenty of cash. Actually, I just paid $19.99 (US) to watch Everything Everywhere All at Once on Amazon. And, I saved myself a good deal of money. It was for myself, my wife, and my adult son. It would have cost at least that much for the 3 of us to go to the movie theater, not counting any popcorn, drinks, or food we would have purchased. And, we could watch the movie in comfort of my own home.
