Last September, YouTube began testing a new feature called profile cards, which showed a user’s public information and comment history on the current channel. The feature was touted as a way for creators to more easily identify their biggest fans by offering easy access to their past comments. Now, YouTube is launching the product to the general public, initially on Android.

To be clear, the comment history that displays isn’t a user’s full YouTube comment history (though that would be interesting!).

While YouTube has promoted the feature as a way to connect with community members and identify a channel’s best commenters, it could also be useful for identifying trolls.
Being able to see the commenter’s history on the channel can help creators or moderators make more informed decisions about whether future comments from the same users should be hidden, or if the user is trustworthy enough to earn a spot on the “approved users” list, for example.

It could also be used as a means to identify abusive users and trolls by tracking their comment histories. There is a flip side to this too, however, as the data Profile cards give to identify trolls may also be used by them if they are targeting particular subscribers.

We will have to wait and see how the general rollout plays out, and whether if Profile cards become a force for good and active engagement rather than for abuse.

YouTube is testing out two new features that it hopes will reduce the number of toxic comments posted in reply to videos.

YouTube is a particularly strange and nasty place when it comes to the comments section. However, those in charge of the platform are keen to change that. They've shown that this week by introducing two new features. The first is something anyone who replies to a stranger's YouTube video should be doing anyway. It gives commenters a chance to rethink what they're about to post.

We are launching a new feature that will push commenters to reconsider hateful and offensive remarks before posting, as well as a filter that allows creators to review negative comments that had been automatically held for review.

The user will then still have the option to "post anyway" which is where new feature number two comes in. YouTube creators will now be able to review any comments on their videos that were held for review because YouTube deemed them to be offensive. From there, creators can either approve, hide, or report the comments.

YouTube gives dislikes the thumbs-down, hides public counts
Creators will still be able to see how many people disliked their videos

YouTube has announced that it’ll be hiding public dislike counts on videos across its site, starting today. The company says the change is to keep smaller creators from being targeted by dislike attacks or harassment, and to promote “respectful interactions between viewers and creators.” The dislike button will still be there, but it’ll be for private feedback, rather than public shaming.

This move isn’t out of the blue. In March, YouTube announced that it was experimenting with hiding the public dislike numbers, and individual creators have long had the ability to hide ratings on their videos.

YouTube says that when it tested hiding dislike numbers, people were less likely to use the button to attack the creator — commenting “I just came here to dislike” was seemingly less satisfying when you don’t actually get to see the number go up.

Dislike counts going private could help hide an embarrassing piece of YouTube history: the most disliked video on the entire site is the company’s own Rewind from 2018. That particular recap video sparked so much ire that YouTube recently announced that the annual Rewind videos were canceled.
