For those unfamiliar with the markets the Chines Market has been crashing with a large percentage of stocks suspended from trading to prevent further loses.

Fear had spread ito the US markets: The DOW was down 212 when the "technical glitch" halted trading.

Whatever-How vulnerable we are in the cyber-age.

A halt of all the trading of all stocks on the NYSE of this length is unprecedented.

Yeah it's plenty scary but the consequences would not be as dire as you suggest. There are other markets and means to trade NYSE listed stocks. But definitely not a confidence builder. (Not sure of those alternate markets and method are avaialable atm.)

Given developments in Greece and China, not sure of it could have come on a worse or better day.

I'm not wondering. These so-called glitches are probes... test drives, designed to trigger reactions, to observe results and responses. Soon will be the coordination of simultaneous large-scale multiple events that will stretch our ability to sufficiently recover. Not if… when. We'll be longing for the good old days when we called them glitches.

I suppose it could have been a totally unrelated off hand remark but it's hard to ignore this tweet of last night

"A computer malfunction that knocked out trading at the New York Stock Exchange for more than three hours Wednesday probably stemmed from a software update that went awry, said two people briefed on a preliminary review....."

QUERY: If the NYSE were hacked would they admit it and would the government dissuade them from saying so?

3 hours is not an "unprecedented" trading halt (9/11, snow, hurricanes were multi-day).

America won't collapse over trading disruptions; that's silly.

    Damn, I missed out.

I have a feeling that the outage was caused by "hackers", but it would be too embarrassing to admit.

I believe if there was in fact a hack, the issue would not be embarrassment, but rather a loss of confidence, which could have serious consequences that would ripple through the financial sector.

I don't believe the NYSE would ever admit to a major hack. News would come only through a leak.

I think it was one of the borked Windows Updates!

Also, as a previous poster mentioned about USA going down if Wall St crashes... it's not just USA that goes down, they'll take the rest of the world down with them...

    Bring back Glass-Steagall!

"And all The King's horses and all The King's men, Couldn't put Glass-Steagall together again."

Maybe if we ever see the day they take big money out of politics. But ATM there are literally billions that would be spent to block it. And sadly, the financial industry has been so widely restructured since it was repealed, some valid reasons actually exist for keeping it dead. Would be a complex task to roll back the changes in the industry because of it's foolhardy repeal. Anyways, it's always a good idea to repeal post-1929 legislation that was specifically enacted to prevent another depression.

"Were the NYSE, Wall Street Journal and United Airlines Hacked?....

...What went wrong? Computer glitches, reportedly. But is there more to the story? Jonathan Sander, strategy and research officer at data security company Stealthbits Technologies, told us there’s no reason to doubt the strong statements both United and the NYSE (pictured) made via Twitter about their respective outages.
'But what does it say that this is the first thing everyone assumes? If you went to a clothing store on Main Street and there was a ‘we’ll be back’ later sign in the window, would you assume a thief had broken in?' Sander asked. 'It’s very clear that the good guys are not winning the PR battle in the digital security world. We all assume the bad guys can take down any sized company at any time...........

NYSE President Tom Farley said an SEC (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) software update that morning could have triggered the outage. With that in mind, Baikalov asked a pointed question: Was it really that much cheaper to deploy system-wide changes right before the opening bell, and bring the whole thing down, than to execute a careful deployment overnight, with sufficient time for testing and reversing the changes if needed?..........'”

The extreme and complex interdependence/interconnection of our vulnerable technological-based economy is frightening.

Re: The Norse map in the above "article":

Fascinating website, for those like myself who did not know about it:

    http://map.norsecorp.com/

    "
    "Norse Dark Intelligence

Every second, Norse collects and analyzes live threat intelligence from darknets in hundreds of locations in over 40 countries. The attacks shown are based on a small subset of live flows against the Norse honeypot infrastructure, representing actual worldwide cyber attacks by bad actors. At a glance, one can see which countries are aggressors or targets at the moment, using which type of attacks (services-ports)...

Norse exposes its threat intelligence via high-performance, machine-readable APIs in a variety of forms."

    LOL, exactly my point.

Well, the issue would be both. If it was indeed a "hack", then I sure hope they will boost their defense.
