The government hopes to facilitate this new ecosystem, one that will be interoperable and run largely by private parties. Under the plan, Internet users could go to any private credential provider of their choice and verify their identity, then use that credential to log in to any site which supports the identity ecosystem. Have one credential from Google and another from Verisign, but want to log in to Facebook? Either credential should work.

The program will be coordinated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the part of the Commerce Department that has set national standards since 1901. NIST will coordinate the new strategy but insists it will be led by the private sector, that privacy is paramount, and that consumer advocates and privacy groups will be part of the process.

Internet ID plan moves forward

The Obama administration said today that it’s moving ahead with a plan for broad adoption of Internet IDs despite concerns about identity centralization, and hopes to fund pilot projects next year.

At an event hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C., administration officials downplayed privacy and civil liberties concerns about their proposal, which they said would be led by the private sector and not be required for Americans who use the Internet.

A 55-page document (PDF) released by the White House today adds a few more details to the proposal, which still remains mostly hazy and inchoate.

Well, it's nice when hazy and inchoate things are also tedious and long. And don't forget boring. That way it can just meander forward. But what's up with the Chamber of Commerce these days? Hiring spies, and hosting p.r. campaigns for government proposals Something tells me I'm going to get frequent flier miles and customer-care discounts with my new government-issued, super-shiny internet i.d. badge
