I'm having a problem using WPA-2 on my home network, but WPA works fine. Having been convinced by many experts in this forum of the need for encryption, am I less secure using WPA?
I would assume that it would also depend on what type of encryption key you're using: TKIP or AES? I do not think you are forgoing any security by using WPA. While I'm not too familiar myself with the innerworkings of 802.11, here might be a good place to start reading: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r17674708-Isnt-WPA2-recommended-Hard-to-find
IMO, if the encryption key is convoluted enough, I'd think you'd be pretty safe. I use the 63 random printable ASCII characters password from here https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm (Note that each time you load the page, a new password is generated.) (I copy it to a text file that I can use to enter the key wherever I need it... PC, router, wherever.)
