    Hello,
I thought it would be good to have a thread to discuss both stable and beta releases of WinRAR.
I will start it off with the latest WinRAR stable release version 5.31.

    Hi Kent,
Thanks for starting the thread and for reminding us all about WinRAR. It definitely deserves it!

In this posting I will try to look at the recent 7-Zip issue (as mentioned in the 7-Zip thread ) with respect to WinRAR. I became aware of the issue with respect to WinRAR in a thread at DSLR.

WinRAR uses a 7-Zip plugin 7zxa.dll file. You can find it in the WinRAR folder.
In WinRAR version 5.31 the version of 7zxa.dll is 15.9.0.0.

    WinRAR_2016-05-15_01.gif

That version of the 7-Zip plugin from October 2015 may be vulnerable. The most recent version from 10 May 2016 is 16.0.0.0.

You can now do two things:

    1.
Upgrade WinRAR to version 5.40 beta 1 as has been released very recently as you posted.
That will give you version 16.0.0.0 from 10 May 2016 of the 7-Zip plugin 7zxa.dll .

    2.
Try to manually install the version 16.0.0.0 of the 7-Zip plugin 7zxa.dll file.
The file is available here https://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/files/7-Zip/16.00/
From there get 7z1600-extra.7z and extract it to get 7zxa.dll (get the right 32-bit or 64-bit version).
When you got the right version, copy it to your WinRAR folder.

    Hello Jan,

Sorry for the late reply as I have been a bit busy of late. WinRAR 5.40 beta 1 and 7-Zip 16.00 were released on the same day. Upon checking the version of 7zxa.dll in the WinRAR folder, I find it is still at version 15.14. WinRAR always uses the latest 7-Zip release for this file so I assume since both were released the same day, 7-Zip 16.00 did not make it into WinRAR 5.40 beta 1. It should be in the beta 2 when released as well as the stable when it is released. HTH...

WinRAR beta-releases are often silently updated.
I downloaded the beta1 again and the fileversion of 7zxa.dll is now 16.0.0.0

    Hello mood,

Thanks for that bit of information as I did not realize that there were "silent" updates of the same version. I also just downloaded again and can also confirm the file version. I confirmed the "silent" updates by the digital signatures of the files. My original download was signed on May 10 while the one I just downloaded was signed on May 16. Thanks again...

    Hi,

Was nice to see a recent thread on Winrar. I've been using it for years, mostly for archiving to CD or disk. Do you people run the stable version or the Beta of Winrar.

Does the stable version get updated with security fixes to fix for example the 7Zip problem?

If the next stable version is released, it will have the security fix. But the actual stable v5.31 doesn't have it.
You have to wait for the next stable version to have this security update.

But the beta v5.40 is receiving the security update, the version of 7zxa.dll is 16.2.0.0

To be honest Winrar is probably the most cost effective license i have ever purchased.

I paid once years ago and the license is still valid today.

Thanks for that. Shame the stable version doesn't get security fixes.
Happy that i run the beta now :)

I've bought more than one license (personal, work) and feel it is some of the better money I have spent. A much better investment that the "lifetime" WinZip license that was invalidated when Corel bought them out.

If you don't want to wait for the next stable release, just replace the dll in you current release with the latest one.
