I doubt it. I've used and liked WinPatrol for 6 or 7 years. But it seems to be more of a system notifier and information gatherer rather than serious security application. I think maybe I'm outgrowing WP. I bought a new laptop and did not install it even though the Plus version would be free to install.
Yeah, that's my feeling. I opted for WPP + WP license as $ was a give away...but, seems not to satisfy. I also did not install WPP on new W8.x. Maybe, new promised WPP version will bring satisfy ? WP is too buggy to install. IMO
mine does not alert of that or of change to home page. Getting rid of it it does not seem up to it any more
WP does, at least on my system, notify Home page changes for the default browser. Recently the paid version differs from the free in that alerts will be immediate in the paid version, but will be time-lagged in the Free. Regarding an uninstall alert, WP never notified when an application was uninstalled, but will notify that an application Startup routine is deleted (due to that applications uninstall process). Personally as a long-term paid user of WP my primary use for it is as an autostart notifier as well as a good repository of those autostart functions that I have disabled (and may want to re-enable in the future).
WP does not now inform me of changed pages or when an application Startup routine is deleted. I uninstalled it
I tried it and it does not alert to changed home page on firefox or IE. is it meant to work with Firefox?
Installed over and older version from about a year ago and now i am getting the program launched twice. (meant to be fixed in this new version ironically)
Installed version 33.1.2015.0 today without any problem in XP SP-2. Rebooted and the tray icon is the "Scotty" icon against a green background. The background turns to gold during program changes. No problem with that. Question: whenever I click on the 'cookies" tab, I am automatically directed to file:///C:/Program%20Files/WinPatrol/WinPatrol/cookies.html This redirect continues to take place even after several reboots and even if I am offline. This behavior is new to me and the only change to my system was the WP install. Looking over the options gives no clue as how to stop this from happening. Does anyone know of a way to prevent this automatic redirect and to configure this version to simply allow the user to view the cookies without redirect ?
I used this program years ago and never saw a point to it. If you don't know what to allow or deny how would the average computer user know what to do?
Right click on the program name and click INFO. It will query winpatrol DB and give you information relevant to that program. Its available only in paid version.
I've always like WP, but when it changed hands I was hoping Bret would put forth the effort and upgrading the program by adding other features or enhancing current ones, such as the registry monitor. I've used a list someone created here on the forums to manually add to the reg watch list, but I always thought that was something they could have enhanced to help users figure out which keys to enter or something along those lines, rather than try to start a new program with Winprivacy, which I haven't been too impressed with thus far.
Cool tip to change WinPatrol tray icon Tip of the month Do you want the blue orb Scotty icon in your notification tray? If so, try this: Open Regedit Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\BillP Studios\WinPatrol\Options Right click on the right side of the screen and select New -> String Value Name the new string "TrayIcon" Set the value to 107 Close Regedit Scotty will pick up this change in a bit and definitely after rebooting. Additional values you can use: Deleting this option will provide the correct Green system tray icon but you can use our little secret to obtain an alternate icon if you really want. I can't say it will always work but you can use... 107 = Blue Orb 106 = classic original scotty 167 = Plus shield with magnify glass 104 = BillP Studios TV with Scotty inside 184 = Screen with small clock/watch 301 = Yellow question mark 102 or 302 = Yellow Tile with Scotty 103 or 159 = Blue Tile with Scotty 101 = Green Tile with Scotty 161 = Yellow Paw 165 = WinPatrol Startup Programs icon
"Subscription Free pricing is going once, going twice, …" https://www.winpatrol.com/ Current licenses remain lifetime. I don't see a date when the subscription free pricing is going away. edit: On the facebook page, it shows March 31st.
Thanks for the update Charyb. WinPatrol is entering its final phase. It will be like many other security products littered along the security path... In this forum, I may have been the first to predict its demise after Bill sold. Soon enough, it will be like Ad-Aware (of old) and Spybot.... even like SAS... .... Do you remember when we used to use.... [insert previously useful product].... WinPatrol under Bill -- RIP. It's over. Get over it. That is all. -Frank
i tried it on a virtual win 7. It responded once to a changed home page Then did not respond any more to changed home pages tests And it still has a bill p folder. Not working since change in my experience
WinPatrol 33.5.2015.3 What's new in this release (posted April 14th): Fixed issue with recurring alerts Fixed issue where registry monitoring did not always alert Enhanced background process to improve speed of detections Enhanced product display and sorting on systems with large numbers of programs Improved registration process Fixed sorting on Delay Time in Delayed Start tab http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html
An annual fee for this type of software? To be completely honest, it's not worth anything annually. I think switching to this new pricing model is a bad move. If many people already pay annually for other software, I honestly don't see many tacking on another annually paid product, especially for this type of software. I say stick with the old price model for WinPatrol.
