Wine doesn't go well with the peeper

I am fairly satisfied with Thunderbird as my email app but I do wish I could get PopPeeper (Pp) to run on Linux. I tried running it using Wine. Pp executed just fine & worked just like it works using Windows. However, its GUI at "expanded" size was only 2" wide & the text was almost microscopically small. Nothing I tried could make it any larger.

I worked with Pp-on-wine for a while, using a jeweler's loupe with my nose nearly touching the monitor. I could see that Pp was working fine, but the super-tiny size is a definite no-go for any day-to-day use.

Any comments regarding the use of wine would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't used my Windows computer for nearly a week now. At this stage I am able to do all my daily computer activities using only my Zorin Linux computer. Even so, I am still very much a C-average freshman at Linux Junior High.

this is in Ubuntu, but maybe it will also work in Zorin...

It's worth reading this regarding security. Note that it is possible to sandbox wine with Firejail or confine it with AppArmor. But it's not trivial for a Linux newbie and I'd rather recommend not using it until you're a bit more experienced.

EDIT: If it comes to alternatives for PopPeeper, your desktop environment might offer built-in notifications (e.g., KDE does). Thunderbird add-ons which might offer what you want are Mailbox Alert and Scriptable Notifications. The latter looks a bit more difficult to setup but the instructions and ready-to-use scripts on its homepage should be understandable. I haven't tried either of them, though.

@wat0114 -- 10Q ^nth. I read the link & have copied it to my To-Do file. I will give it a full-on try when I graduate to at least sophomore. However, I am getting much more adept at using B-bird (it's a T-bird clone) & its calendar is really handy, atop its pdg email abilities.

@summerheat -- Thanks a LOT for the security heads-up! :thumb:

Pp receives & sends mail, checks spam, & checks spelling -- nada mas! It's a plain & simple email app, which is what I prefer.

The developer of Pp insists on calling it a "notifier" because it lacks a lot of the bells & whistles & skins & eye candy that "full-service" email clients offer. As for notifications, I did not use PopPeeper (Pp) on Windows for its notifications. In fact, I disabled its notifications feature. I am not a fan of being notified.

Hm, but then I don't understand why you need it. Isn't receiving and sending mails, spam filtering and checking spelling what Thunderbird/Betterbird is already doing?

True what you say -- but B-bird has a other components besides just email -- calendar for example. BUT -- I am learning to love B-bird almost as much as I love the peeper.

Even so, I am still aiming to learn more about using Wine for running Windows apps on Linux. Also, I need to learn the use of VirtualBox. So much to do, so little time (at my age, that is). :isay:
