Can anyone help me renable the Windows Security Center? I tried the tip from this link http://www.jsifaq.com/SF/Tips/Tip.aspx?id=8427 but it did not work. Any form of help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

PS: I was able to remove the haxdoor with the help of Sophos Antirootkit, Haxfix and Trend Micro IS 2006.

    Regards,

    Hello thanatos_theos,

    Option #1:

    To Restore Windows Security Center

This threat attempts to disable the features in the Windows Security Center, available in Windows XP Service Pack 2. If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and would like to restore the full functionality of the Windows Security Center, please complete the following steps:

Important: If your computer is connected to a domain, you may not be able to adjust these settings. If so, contact your network administrator for more information.

1.) Click Start > Control Panel.
    2.) Double-click the Security Center.
3.) In the right pane, click Windows Firewall. The Windows Firewall appears.
    4.) Select On.
5.) Click OK to close the Windows Firewall.
6.) In the left pane of the Security Center, select Change the way Security Center alerts me.
    7.) Click Alert Settings.
8.) Select Alert Settings, Firewall, and Virus Protection.
    9.) Click OK
    10.) Click Automatic Updates.
    11.) Select Automatic.
    12.) Click OK.
    13.) Exit the Security Center.

    Hope this helps.

    Option 1:
The "Change the way Security Center alerts me" is grayed. I can't open it.

    Option 2:
I merged the .reg file to the registry but nothing happened.

    Option 3:
I ran the tool but nothing also happened.

These 3 options didn't resolve my problem. Nonetheless, thanks.

PS: Are there any other ways beside these 3?

    thanks,
    thanatos

What does the Security Center service show in administrative tools, services, in the control panel?
    Automatic, manual, or disabled?

Pardon? Do you mean in Group Policy>Administrative Templates>Window Components>Security Center? It is enabled. If that's not what you mean, could you give me a step by step procedure?

    Thanks,
    thanatos

Ronjor means if you go to start, control panel, adminstive tool.
    then double click on services.
now find security centre and find out if its disabled manual or automatic.

Thanks CogitoErgoSum, lodore and ronjor! That fixed the problem. The Security Center was in "manual". When I went there earlier (Start>Run>service.msc), there was no Security Center. Maybe the .reg file I downloaded from the link posted by CogitoErgoSum restored it.

    thanks a lot,
    thanatos
