    I have an external HD attached to my desktop. When I schedule a "full system scan", does WD scan only the system drive or does it also scan the external hard drive?

    LenC, according to Microsoft, a "A full scan will check all files on your hard disk and all currently running programs." Re: Scan Your Computer Using Windows Defender.

    If you want to make sure your external drive is scanned, follow the To scan specific areas of your computer only instructions of the above link to set up a Custom scan.

    Thank you.

    The problem is you can't schedule a custom scan - only a full or quick scan. Not a big deal.

    LenC, you're welcome! Unfortunately, yes, there is no auto scheduler for a Custom scan; it has to be done manually. Take care.

    Microsoft Security Essentials is being released as a beta today. This replaces Defender once installed and will allow scheduled and right click scanning.

    It is also very good at detecting malware - and free.
