I've been using Windows Defender (also known as MSE on Windows 7) for year and normally it would update just once or twice a day, but now it's every 2 hours on the dot, it's been like this for a few days now, and so I'm wondering if something is wrong on my end or are others also noticing this behavior? Also is there a Task Schedule for this kind of thing, it seems a bit excessive to me and I'd like to have it back to once or twice a day. http://i.imgur.com/1toEP30.png
AV usually updates every hour, people were actually complaining, that WD lacks that. Even every 2 hours might not be enough with zero days threats. Even on your screenshot you can see, that you have missed like 5-10 definition updates within those 2 hours. If you use AV, you have to keep it updated.
I've just checked on my Win 10 system and it's also been updating every 2 hours, Windows must have just changed something as I've not noticed this previously, a change for the better compared to earlier default behaviour.
Just checked the Defender interface, no, it has not updated for the past four hours. So, I'll keep manually updating, but I like the every-two-hour idea myself. Windows 10 14393.351
OK, I see what you mean. I will have to investigate this because some are getting regular updates and some aren't for some reason. Maybe because manually updating interferes with a scheduled task? I don't know. Thanks for pointing this out.
You can also force updates by building a task in Task Scheduler with System as the account to run: MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate - MMPC Two hours is good, one hour is better. Or you can build a shortcut to it on your desktop and whack it whenever you think about it. Neither interferes with the resident Windows Update routine. Here's a representative screenie from my RSS reader for the updates as MS publishes them (the three time stamped are for today). My system hibernates from 11PM to 9AM so it doesn't read during that time. Unfortunately, past days' readings are dated only. https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/rss/updatesrss.aspx EDIT: It seems MS is several days in arrears in its RSS feed data. Odd. The home of that feed is up to date: https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/definitions/whatsnew.aspx
Windows Defender has been updating every two hours on one of my Win10 machines lately too. I haven't checked the other machine running WD yet.
I stand to be corrected on this, but I'm fairly certain one reason Defender defs won't update at all is if Windows Update is disabled by any of several methods - gpedit, registry hack, programs like O&O ShutUp10, etc.
No, updates are enabled. I'm going to leave Defender alone and see if it updates every two hours. If not, I'll try to set up a task in Task Scheduler like you suggested. Thanks!
Defender updates have reverted to their usual state for me today, maybe some new server/ push definitions trialling was going on yesterday
For Pro or Enterprise there're policy and corresponding registry to determin when and how often update, but I believe that doesn't have effect on Home (unless you install un-official policy editor).
Well, here's the issue already so I'm just letting it go. Pretty weird. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...multiple/8ddc5b3b-b846-4563-83bd-470e205cea1e
