I've been using the free version of one of the higher-ranked software given in the list shared in the article.

I see that at ShadowServer.Org where they list AV vendors Zero Day tests every day that Windows Defender is scoring much higher places these days. I am not sure what all the data means and wonder how reliable these daily results are and whether they give any true indication of the AVs performance?

Is it possible that it doesn't work with Anniversary Update? :doubt:

WD is getting so good the commercial players are having to add new services to maintain some differentiation. When WD scores close to the commercial players the rationale buyer doesn't. To nudge you to buy the A-V company extends the product to include "useful utilities". I know some of you have other words for the useful utilities.:)

Maybe it's been posted up earlier in this thread but it bears repeating anyhow...

Check on the latest Windows Defender defs:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/portal/definitions/whatsnew.aspx

I added the RSS feed to my reader. That way I can make sure my scheduled MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate -MMPC task did its thing. Not that I'm obsessive about it. :isay:

:thumb: Thanks, nice find! I've subscribed to the RSS feed on the machine running WD.

Is there a way to make this hidden - no window pop-up? Ta.

EDIT: I had a look in gpedit. Does this (see attached) work?

I was referring to building a task in Task Scheduler to run MpCmdRun.exe. I set mine to check every 2 hours.

But gpedit looks good. If one is running Pro. I'm not.

    Thanks stapp.

WD has received 4 updates since I started this machine this morning my time, so the RSS feed does seem more up to date.

    Cheers.

I never really understood why people care about such frivolous things as virus definitions updates (borderline obsessive?) as if there aren't enough things in the world to worry over.

Just let it do its thing and stop worrying about it. To each their own I guess.

Congratulations. You discovered the program update itself leads the Web site data update. :thumb:

The site is to post up the changelogs, not as an instantaneous announcement. But considering the global scope, it's pretty darn good.

The latest version post up often precedes the changelog as well:

    1: Yawn.
2: The discussion here is to verify WD is "do(ing) its thing." DUH.
    3: Yes, you do.

Agreed, completely. This forum borders on the obsessed, and some will refuse an AV unless there are hourly definition updates. As long as they get updated regularly, I don't see the problem with it.

Windows Defender updates several times a day. Not all definition updates contain new threats.
The idea of posting in the updates forum is to bring attention, for those that may interested, in what new threats have been added and where to locate pertinent information.

A sample span of releases from Tuesday afternoon to Thursday early evening per the MS RSS feed. Fascinating, isn't it? :geek:

Can you elaborate on how this is fascinating?

I mean, I just watched a documentary starring David Attenborough, that was fascinating. Are you comparing AV updates to that?
