Hi Everyone, Looking for experiences of others who have successfully migrated the OS partition of an old computer to a new computer (and hard drive) with dissimilar hardware. Does the Windows OS need to be "re-activated"? How about other programs that are on the migrated partition? Hoe much of a problem is this, and is there anything that I can do (before the migration) that can make the process easier? Thanks so much for any help and experiences shared. -CFguy
Well, I responded to your other thread concerning Windows. In addition, if the hardware difference is small (different disk, different network adapter), MicroSloth will allow the migration of an activated Windows RETAIL license. If the original machine broke, they may allow license migration if you can convince them. Both of these efforts require MicroSloth interaction (learn their 800 number). Some other products also may need to be migrated with interaction... applications that are licensed to a single machine may need this interaction, it's a crapshoot with vendors. If you're migrating to a new machine (different mainboard at a minimum), you WILL need to interact with single machine license software vendors... there's just no way around that.
I always thought a Retail license allowed for Windows to be moved to a completely different PC, however: That was my experience too.
