Are Apple or Microsoft known to spy on users of Internet Explorer or Safari?

I am assuming Chrome OS is a bad idea from a privacy point of view. But if Google collects information on users, then who says Microsoft or Apple can't do it too?

Does one have to use Firefox or another open source browser to avoid spying?
