    Windows will never force me to have resort to their crappy lame and downright sloppy dull appearances.

    I killed that flat ugly square look with ClassicShell on day 1 and returned the start menu and button without spending a dime.

    Keep us updated on 8.1 as you roll it along. As for me 8 is going to stay straight 8 until official release i think. Bad enough getting all the puke out of 8 first release.

    Start 8 has released a beta that works with Win 8.1. I'm running it right now. StartIsBack has not released an update yet that's compatible with Win 8.1. I personally prefer StartIsBack.

    Later...

    General Windows 8 Question:

    If you have Windows 8.0 or 8.1 (64 bit Home Premium) without crapware and with minimal productivity type software installed, about how much disk space is used?

    Thank you.

    about 18-19 GB on a 64 bits machine.
    probably a lot less on a 32 bits machine.

    on a 64 bits machine it's smaller than Win 8, as this one was about 24 GB of disk space.

    please note that those 3 files will be flagged as malware by a few antivirus scanners:

    * C:\Windows\SysWOW64\netprofm.dll
    * C:\Windows\SysWOW64\themeui.dll
    * C:\Windows\SysWOW64\wmdrmsdk.dll

    they are legitimate system files.

    In Win8 I could search easily from Metro. For example, if I typed "sched" then I'd see Task Scheduler. That doesn't happen in 8.1. Anyone sorted this out?

    One thing I would like to see...

    Have the Start Screen/Modern UI version of Internet Explorer still work, even if a user picks a different browser as their default.

    I find it annoying that a user can't use the "Metro" version of IE, unless it's setup as the default browser.

    Anyone else with me on this?

    i don't use Metro for that stuff.

    i just right click on the Start button/hotspot, launch the Control Panel from there then search the Control Panel for it or other system settings.

    I just tried typing "sched" in Control Panel. It works but I think it is easier from Metro. Try it from Metro and see what you think. Win8 Metro. You don't have to type in a field. Just type.

    i know.

    but can you find your Task Scheduler from there? ;)

    anyway, i don't like to use Metro for that stuff because i sometimes get served Metro-ized version of things like Windows Updates, for example.

    by searching from the Control Panel, i'm sure i stay in Desktop mode.

    Sure.

    Try this. See if you can find "Vault". It's easy from Metro.

    it works both from Metro and the desktop Control Panel.
    you save one mouse click with Metro. :p

    still, i'd rather use the Control Panel in desktop mode.
    like i said before, i'm one of those who very rarely used the Start button on previous Windows OSes.
    if i can find the Control Panel and my folder with shortcuts i'm good to go. ;)

    Thanks. I didn't know it worked from Control Panel. I'll try that in 8.1.

    Edit... Works fine.

    I know for sure this is a problem on Windows 8, not sure if it's been fixed on Windows 8.1.

    I'll try it out on Windows 8.1, and then release any information I may have

    I doubt there is any change though, but I could be wrong.

    TyRidian,

    No problem in my Win 8. Firefox is the default browser. I can use Internet Explorer from Metro.

    Edit.... My Win 8.1 is the same.

    Really? That is odd.

    Are you sure it's the actual GUI version of metro and not the desktop version of IE?

    I don't use IE at all but if I click the Metro icon, IE opens. What happens with yours?

    he probably means it opens the desktop version of IE instead of the Metro version, is my guess...

    on mine, when i select Firefox as the default browser, the IE i get from Metro is the desktop version.
