Unsure how TC operates, maybe a problem with your system files. Have you run SFC before?

Did FastCopy have a CRC checking capacity? If yes, was it enabled during transfer?

I ran SFC and it said some files are corrupt and it can't correct them, so after an upgrade install and manually extracting and replacing files from Win7 ISO failed, I did a clean install and everything is now back to normal. Probably I have done something I shouldn't have. Thanks GlobalForce for your help :D

Checked with all, no errors in copying in Windows 7 64-bit. Don't have any partitions though but do have 3 drives on the system and also use a couple of external HDDs. Tested with most s/w and no errors till date. TeraCopy is the default choice because of its speed.

Sadeghi commented having had partial system corruption. *As an aside - TC doesn't copy alternate data streams, does it?

Well I just tested Teracopy again, found out when it corrupts the files. It only happens when it asks to overwrite files, target file and sometimes the source too will get corrupted.

That with or without CRC checking enabled? If with, maybe you'd do one more without and get back ....

    In both cases that happens.

Then there's no way I'd stay with it - no if, ands or buts. Software's gotta work before it's fast!

Is there software or a feature built into Windows 7 that allows you to check/compare backed up files to the originals? After reading this thread, I think I would feel more comfortable backing up data/pictures using the manual copy/paste in Windows. But I want to be able to check the backed up data/pictures if it all copied correctly, isn't corrupted, and is exactly the same as the originals.

You're essentially looking for an md5 or crc hashing utility. Since I don't run Win7 I'll leave the door open for a suggestion.

You have seen this right? Better than copy/paste and less likely to cause attribute related problems down the road.

    Re: Teracopy & Windows 7

Upon reviewing the contents of my external hard drive & my favorites, I believe I have answered my own question. :) I found this one on my hard drive: Beyond Compare 3 - for comparing many different file types and folders in many different ways & backing up (amazing app). And here's one that I stumbled upon a few months ago: HashCheck - for verifying checksum files & creating them, and shell integration in file/folder properties. These are two great feature rich apps. Have any of you ever used these?

Awesome, I never knew that existed. I guess I'll be using Robocopy along with Beyond Compare and HashCheck. :thumb:

Sure, BC's the one FanJ's always push'in - HC I haven't come across. Regardless the copier, make sure it works!

Just thought I'd ask... why did you cross out that second part? o_O

If one where to use Windows' built-in copier, Robocopy, or Beyond Compare to copy files, and then they verified their backup using both HashCheck & Beyond Compare, wouldn't that be more than enough to make sure it works? :)

'Cause sometimes - better to keep the lower-half :D;) As to your second, I'd say so. Isn't the goal to preserve original content?

o_O Sorry.. I don't quite understand what you mean.

Well yes, the goal is to preserve the original content... but also to produce an identical backup copy of the content onto another storage device (HDD) without errors/corruption.

I'm not sure but I think the problem was because of drive configuration, I'll open another thread to ask about that.

You mean something like DMA transfer?

Well I disabeld DMA transfer and I don't get any errors but now both my SATA and IDE drives run in PIO Mode 4 and the system is too slow.

Hmm, mixed drives! I forwarded the page so you could check where we stood on DMA, enabled OK.
Now to ask from which drive to which were your copies performed? You familiar with this program?

I have two IDE and one SATA drive, I tried every possible combination but got errors everytime except now that I disabled DMA.

Haven't tried that program before, what should I be looking for?

You've answered for the moment. Now I'm not entirely sure about primary / secondary channels as they apply to drives so tell me which is which. Am I correct thinking only one's primary while additional drives are all secondary? Once you confirm I'm thinking we'll be close enough ....
