Windows 11 - six months later, still totally meh

Let us bask in mediocrity. Here's a short review of Windows 11 six months after my early Dev Build testing, focusing on unresolved performance and ergonomics issues, problems with Explorer, system menu, system tray, power & battery indicator, annoying notifications, some other observations, and more. Me no likey.

Thanks for the review. Was there any reason they couldn't add TPM support and other security features to Windows 10 instead?

Already supported in 10. Just not mandatory.

The thing 10 didn't get was DoH, after initial claims it was going to.

WoW. That's extremely harsh and unfair. I think Windows 11 is better than 10 in nearly every way, and the best MS OS yet.

Can you quantify those better points? Because I can quantify the negatives. Mouse clicks, performance times, visibility and availability of information in UI.

    • I consider the UI facelift a pro
    • DoH available for any server now
    • Win11 is more stable
    • Windows Security is better; more stable, responsive, and scans faster
    • Window snapping has been improved
    • Windows itself is actually smaller
    • New Action Center is better
    • Android Apps Support in Windows 11

That's just what I can think of off the top of my head.

For me the only reason I have kept 11 on my laptop is because it handles 4k displays better than 10. Otherwise I would have gone back to 10. I guess DoH has a little value. Overall 11 still feels very much unfinished, like 10 did when it was released.

    Mrk,

I have two computers multi-booting with Win10, Win11 and Linux Mint. NVMe drives. Intel CPUs. Explorer opens "instantaneously" in each OS.

I switched back from 11 to 10 Enterprise and I do have a 4K Alienware monitor. They perform exactly the same in both OSes in my experience. Why do you think it performs better in Windows 11?

I can't speak for Jack but I feel the same way. For me, with a dual 4k monitor setup I have less "lag". I also had issues on 10 with getting Windows to find my secondary monitor. Also one would run at 60hz the other at 30hz. On Windows 11 I do not have these issues.

I also concur with Brian K. No issues with Intel. I have an AMD CPU on a laptop at work and will test it out tomorrow.

As I outlined in my recent article, and pointing to Microsoft's own article, this bug affects Ryzen in particular. And I'll post another article very soon, which shows how to undo this sluggishness (in addition to the perf tweaks I wrote before).

It's more of a scaling issue. Since it is a 17 inch screen with a default scaling of 250% there are fewer things cut off in Windows 11 than in Windows 10.

Microsoft will tweak Windows 11’s UI and features pretty much whenever it wants

For those using Win 11 beta 22000.526, I don't suppose any of you have tried Open-Shell with it. If so, does it work?
