Microsoft won’t stop you installing Windows 11 on older PCs

^ "It’s a big change that means millions of PCs won’t be left behind, technically."

Why didn't MS say so before?

OK, so it's at your risk because I read earlier about 50%-plus higher incidence of kernel-mode crashes with an un-suipported processor. Hopefully, during the system scan while upgrading, there will be some sort of pop-up notice warning the user.

Thanks for the info, Gandalf_The_Grey. :)

Are you serious or are you making a funny?

Even though I find any potential uptick in e-waste deplorable, I would not down-grade from Windows 11 out of anger or protest. Oh here, it runs better than Windows 10, it just does. Updated a little while ago to v.22000.168 but did leave the DEV channel. I ain't pushing my admittedly good luck so far. :cautious:

NVMe write speed seems to be 3 times lower on 11 compared to 10. So make sure, it is worth it.

Let's see how this pans out. But from my perspective, nope. 2025 is the year of possible decisions, including more workloads on Linux and Win10 for gaming. Also, as TairikuOkami mentions, the performance in Win11 seems a bit meh (at least in my test on a limited range of hardware). Might be Dev/Beta, or just bad design.

Well, in that scenario (running 11 on unsupported hardware), would installing updated builds from sites like UUDump be successful, in lieu of going thru the more convenient internal update channel? The article doesn't say exactly.

It irks me that Microsoft itself is not consistently providing any meaningful insight; we're just getting bits and pieces at a time instead of the whole story. There must be legions out there wanting to go to Windows 11 and there's no clear-cut way forward right now. The October release date is right around the corner. :cautious:

Microsoft is threatening to withhold Windows 11 updates if your CPU is old

I'm assuming something like UUDump will work if someone maintains it. I expect someone will make it happen one way or another but I also expect it will be a very manual process. Microsoft isn't going to provide this information because despite the fact they will let people do this they still don't want you to so they are not going to lay out the directions. They still want you to buy a new device ahead of any other workarounds. The hardware industry is likely pressuring them to do so. My desktop turns 10 in November and short of being locked out of updates I see no reason to replace it so they are trying to change that situation. As it still outperforms many new devices I have handled in the last couple of years I am not spending the money. So Microsoft, it didn't work. :p

That's obvious and you sum it up very well in a single sentence. The largest tech device manufacturers stand to enter another very profitable windfall profit bonanza for their businesses once Micro demands the higher end specs for it's new 11 to not only run properly but as an article I found today in Verge reports, also receive updates.

Guess we're in the wait and see timeframe until it's official release which is been pointed out IS just around the corner.

Any one knows if a W11 installation done with an ISO from UUDump gets updated or does the updates ONLY come to the insiders?

Windows 11 is going to be just like Vista, just like Windows 8. But hey.

I doubt that I'm going to purchase a new computer just for Win11 when my current one is in EXCELLENT shape.
I'm not going to reinstall all my software, proprietary apps just to please Microsoft.
I will use Windows 10 as long as I have no issues with my current computer.

We can always count on this not being the last time either. Or Micro announcing no more in the series like they had everyone believe. I caught a lot of flack saying 10 would not be the end of the versions. Peeps said it wasn't going to happen and Wallah!

You can still run Windows 10 after EOL. The good news is no one will write malware for it after the majority of users have moved on.

It may even be more secure than before. What's the bad news? No updated browsers for unsupported Windows unless its forked to continue to support it.

that's a bummer the install.exe will check for tpm 2 , the only way is to install from usb from scratch and overwriting everything and thus tpm check is skipped, I have 9th gen so I dunno why I don't have tpm 2 . Anyway it is stupid that tpm is skipped on usb install versus desktop install (once you login)
A far as how it looks:
it's beautiful this win 11 I must say, no question, it looks modern , really well done imho

weird stuff , there is some prob with simple wall, like SearchFilterHost.exe connecting despite not being allowed and SW crashed once on C++ update, also memory protection did not let me plug external disk, everything else works.

How to use a classic menu in Windows 11 with Open-Shell

The name of the game: productivity. Behold, a guide showing how to use Open-Shell as a replacement for the standard Windows 11 menu, covering installation, transparent menu icon tweak, taskbar color and opacity, menu DPI and font smoothing, some other customizations, and more. Take a look.

I honestly can't help but to think Micro Windows Devs are either so far behind times and trend, that they are only now with 11 not making it an option but setting the taskbar icons center margined when that design is been available since Windows XP. I would have to dig but there's a Launcher with that apple style look for Windows XP I stored away eons ago.
