Microsoft itself confirmed earlier this year that the Windows 10X plans changed, so instead of bringing this operating system to dual-screen devices, the priority right now is to get it ready for single-screen experiences.

“With Windows 10X, we designed for flexibility, and that flexibility has enabled us to pivot our focus toward single-screen Windows 10X devices that leverage the power of the cloud to help our customers work, learn and play in new ways. [...]” Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer, Windows + Devices, announced in May this year.
And according to a new report, we’re getting closer to the moment Windows 10X would finally be ready to go live.

The RTM build is now reportedly set for December, and the plan right now is to launch in the spring of 2021 on the first devices. As said, only single-screen experiences would be powered at first, and a year later the OS could expand to dual-screen models too.

2022 is also expected to bring another important addition to the Windows 10X feature arsenal: support for Win32 apps that would run on cloud power thanks to a new product called Microsoft Cloud PC.

Windows 10X is positioned as a direct rival to Chrome OS, the Google operating system powering Chromebooks, so in many ways, Microsoft wants to slow down the adoption of its rival platform and instead direct more customers to Windows.
But Windows 10X comes with one big advantage in the fight against Chrome OS, and this is the aforementioned cloud-powered Win32 app support.

Windows 10X won’t be offered by Microsoft to other users, which means you can’t just get this OS version and install it on your computer. Instead, it will come pre-loaded on these new PCs, a strategy that its competitors have also embraced for their devices.

Now, as per a new report by Zac Bowden it seems Microsoft may be planning to RTM Windows 10X next week itself. This will enable manufacturers to load and test the final release build before final launch in March-April 2021.
Windows 10X launch will see it coming pre-installed on a number of Notebooks and convertibles. Microsoft may market its modern aesthetics and speed.

According to Microsoft Windows expert Zac Bowden, Windows 10x may be released to manufacturing as soon as today.
He expressed his opinion on Twitter today.

Trying to confirm, but I believe the final build of Windows 10X has been compiled at build 20279. MS will continue to fix bugs internally between now and when the first 10X devices start shipping.

It is widely assumed that the Operating System will be positioned as a competitor to ChromeOS.
The first devices running the Operating System are expected in Spring 2021 and the target audience will probably be teachers, students and users who do not normally use computers.

Windows 10X will drop support for Windows Desktop Drivers

Windows 10X is intended to fix a lot of what is wrong with desktop Windows by offering a much more reliable, secure and easy to update experience.
It appears one of the ways Microsoft plans to achieve this is better quality drivers.

A Microsoft support document found by WindowsLatest confirms Microsoft is dropping the old Universal Driver classification model and will soon be classifying drivers as either Windows Desktop Drivers or Windows Drivers.

Given that Microsoft will only be selling Windows 10x devices pre-installed on hardware, it seems likely that all the drivers will be Windows drivers, but the news does raise concerns around whether Windows 10X will lack support for 3rd party hardware which needs older drivers.

While Microsoft has remained relatively mum on Windows 10X this year, a support document has surfaced hinting that Microsoft’s Modern Standby feature is supported by the infamously elusive operating system (via Windows Latest).

Modern Standby is a relatively new feature for Windows 10 and Xbox users in which devices in “Sleep Mode” are able to download data such as emails, updates, notifications, and other low-level operations.

Microsoft is opening Windows 10X to an “even wider variety of form factors”, according to sources familiar with the development. Microsoft is exploring the possibility of ARM-powered notebooks and convertibles running Windows 10X (modular OS) in the near future.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft is not planning to launch its own device with Windows 10X until 2022.
An expansion to other types of devices is a great move and ARM-powered devices can compete even more closely with Chromebooks. This is because ARM chips should also be cheaper than Intel or AMD, which means more affordable options for students/teachers and frontline workers.

However, Windows 10X is not for everyone and Microsoft’s approach could be similar to Windows RT. In other words, 10X will lack support for true desktop apps, relying completely on the web apps (PWAs) and UWP apps available via Microsoft Store.
In addition to desktop apps support, Windows 10X also won’t support local user accounts and advanced tools like Control Panel and Registry Editor.

A report from The Verge suggests that the leaked build contains support for Win32 apps in a developer-only mode which cannot be accessed by general users. For now, the offering runs UWP apps from the Microsoft Store and Progressive Web Apps through the Chromium-based Edge browser.

While Windows 10 was put in the backseat for the past couple of years and many looked at 10X as a possible revival of excitement for the OS, all eyes should now be focused on Sun Valley – the next major update to Windows 10.
