For those that still use SYSTEM IMAGE BACKUP with Windows 10, please be aware... that feature is set to be DEPRECATED (MicroSloth's term for loss of support) in the Fall Creator's Edition and most likely removed shortly afterwards.

Time to move on... there are soooo many options :D

It's the carry-over from v7 days, just with a different name.

You haven't missed anything important. It's the worst imaging app.

And don't you find it hilarious as plenty of others do that they still show Win 7 in the Control Panel for that in Windows 10?

Heck, I would much better depend on Custom Refresh.WIM for backup and restore purposes if not for Mighty Macrium to carry that load.

It seems like everyone has moved on to Acronis for their protection.

What do you base that on?

I'm sorry, but you obviously do not read the Macrium Reflect threads.

To add to my post, yes, I tested ATI 2018, but I Rejected it as bloated hog. A lot of us tested, but I didn't see many accept it.

I wonder too, like Trooper I used Acronis more than 10 years ago and was never happy with it. It used to be popular at Wilders but not anymore, Macrium has a lot of fans here including me, among the best IMO...

Acronis was a forerunner in imaging, and, way back when, they had a great product. My guess is it was largely the work of one developer who really knew his stuff. But it became clear that, as a development shop, their process was sorely lacking in quality control measures. The product became bloated and defect-ridden. So, like many others, I bailed out and switched to Macrium years ago. I'm still running vn 6 and hoping Reflect is [edit] NOT [/EDIT] going to follow the same course as TrueImage.

By the way, I think the imaging feature packaged with Windows was based on code Microsoft acquired from Acronis.

@layman -- We share very similar experiences with Acronis except that mine was preceded by Norton Ghost and PCTools during the DOS era before Symantec took over and messed up both of those utilities. I suspect that we also share the same wish about Macrium and that you just missed the "not" in hoping that they will not follow the same pattern of development bloat and production quality management that Acronis did.

Unfortunately, that longer-term pattern seems almost irresistible when software makers (not excluding OS makers) reach a point where mere improvements to basic functionality are insufficient to promote their desired "upgrade" sales. Regrettably, I perceive worrying signs that the currently evolving influences on Macrium's management aren't much more immune to it than others have been in the past. Hope I'm wrong about that, but the v7.1 release should be another indicator either way. The delays during extended testing may actually be a good sign. We'll see.

My problem with even what is promised in Macrium 7.1 just doesn't by me anything worth money. CBT is great, I have it in 6. The new MIG isn't worth money to me, as I have pumpernickel. The biggest thing I could wish for is something like Storage Crafts Image mananger. That I would pay Macrium for.

Likewise, especially in view of the anticipated anti-ransomware additions to the MS "Fall Creators Update" for W10 that will handle much more than just just backup image protection alone. In fact, I'd be somewhat concerned that Macrium may encounter some unforeseen issues with that just as they did with their changeover to the Windows Task Scheduler v2 API. So far, Macrium's attempts to fully understand and cope with certain MS Windows features have been rather less than stellar ... never mind coping with the current pace of W10's evolutionary branching.

I used Acronis on and off for over a decade. I haven't liked it since they discontinued True Image Echo. The 2016 was corrupting my Shadow Copy Provider service when the Anniversary edition of Windows 10 was released. Switched to Macrium. I'm not without complaints, but it is far more reliable than Acronis. The Windows backup can die, nobody will miss it.

My own objection to much of the "bloat" is not so much the added features themselves but their extraneous impositions on my operating system that I want to image in its own pristine form and for which purpose I buy backup and recovery software in the first place. If I wanted to back up my OS including a whole bunch of additional kernel mode drivers, autostart services and other extraneous junk, I'm sure I'd have no problem finding plenty of that stuff elsewhere. :gack:

Very good point. Hence I never really install any disk imaging software on my main PC, but rather, use exclusively recovery media to do offline OS backup/restore. IMO, the main point of backing up an OS is to take a snapshot of an clean, pristine OS while the OS was freshly installed, updated, core programs installed and set up, and finally cleaned up. That's the only time when I backup an OS using cold disk imaging. No junk is being backed up.

I suspect I might have some specially high preference for the "cleanness" of the OS.

Well Acronis is the master of bloat. I am happy with Macrium v6 and IFW. The champion of no bloat still is Drive Snapshot. One 359kb exe you don't have to install.

@Peter2150 -- You and I who use Reflect v6 don't have to install Macrium's CBT device class filter driver and service unless we choose to do so, but the v7 installer includes it by default with no "opt out" option except by running the CBT management utility executable manually (no shortcut link) afterward. Even then, it was being re-installed and re-activated (perhaps still is) with at least some v7 update releases. They've promised to make it an installation option for the v7.1 release, but considering some of their other promises made but not yet kept, I'll believe that one when I actually see and test it for myself.
