We have two identical Asus tablets with Intel Clover Trail Atom CPUs. One upgraded to 1709 and the other says this CPU isn't supported and won't upgrade. I wonder why the first one upgraded without a problem? I'll keep working on the second to see if I can upgrade.

Same production dates for both? It seems to be a rather confusing situation. This AskWoody series might help to explain some of it.

Interesting. They are Asus VivoTab TF-810C. According to Woody's list, Win10 isn't supported. I recall the graphics module wasn't supported but the tablets upgraded from Win8 to Win10 without issues.

No big deal. They are slow and rarely used.

I also keep System Restore disabled on two machines but it is always re enabled after a major upgrade (upgrade done through Windows Update). For the record my "Windows.old" folder was almost 40 GB which I deleted through Disk Cleanup, although the empty folder itself cannot be deleted...

    Osaban,

I update using a Win10 UFD. Perhaps that's why our System Restore results differ.

Did you notice if you had more Free Space after running Disk Cleanup? Compared with pre 1709?

Brian, on the machine I'm using 1703 was about 30 GB (Macrium image) and 1709 is about 37 GB (Macrium image)45 GB real volume after cleaning. My volumes are always fat compared to yours... Maybe a clean install would yield a smaller volume...

Thanks Osaban. I think my OS images are small because I have my data files in the D: drive. The Win10 1709 partition has 28 GB used space. The D: drive has 383 GB used. The Win10 1709 partition in my test computer has 13 GB used.

I had no luck on my second attempt with the Asus VivoTab.

Hi Brian, FWIW, when I get to delete my Windows.old folder, free space is going to be about the same as it was before upgrading to FCU. Maybe, a few MB more or less. My Windows.old folder is 11.4GB. When I ll get rid of it, I ll do it via Settings. It takes less than a minute and gets rid of everything (files and folder).

    Bo, thanks for the info.

I just did a fresh Win10 1709 64-bit install to my main computer. Multi-booting with BIBM. From booting the UFD to the Win10 desktop took 13 minutes. After disabling hibernation the used space in the partition was 11.3 GB.

I'll create an image and use the partition for tests.

Edit... No RE was created by the install.

In my case, from 4 PC's:

    a) The System Restore disabled in 2, remain enabled in other 2.

    b) The "windows.old" folder (with 2 empty subfolders) cannot deleted in 1, deteted in other 3.

    1) A System File Check (sfc /scannow) performed, found no errors.
    2) An Error Checking performed (My Computer > Properties > Tools > Error-checking), reboot and voilà!
Now it was possible to delete the "windows.old" folder.

Here too, but on my primary machine only. On the other, it remains enabled.

I reenable, but have never successfully used this feature anyway. Prefer images.

Always disable Fast startup also, which is also 'usually' reenabled ...

Try getting rid of the folders via Settings>System>Storage, Set Storage Sense to On, Click Change How we free up space, look at the bottom.

Another way. This is the way I got rid of my Windows.old folder after upgrading to Creators and the way I ll get rid of the one after updating to FCU. Is effective and fast, it doesnt leave debris.

Settings>System>Storage, Click Storage, Click Temporary files, Look at the bottom.

In both Options, you ll see the choice to get rid of the old Windows version. Perhaps you wont see it now as you ran Disk cleaner but maybe you will and allows you to get rid of the empty folders.

    Thanks for the info.

But in my case it was not possible to delete the folder due to an error (pop up error code).
As I said above, the problem solved with Error Checking.

After selecting a UBS stick in the tray array for safe removal I no longer get a notification that it is safe to remove it (in 1709).

Is this some kind of setting that has changed that I can revert?

    XIII,

I just tried this in 1709. Same notice as before. "... can now be safely removed...".

No, that hasn't changed. Make sure this setting is turned On, "Get Notifications from Apps and other senders"

Go to Settings>System>Notifications & actions. If I turn off that setting, I dont get the sliding message (picture).

A little while ago, I cleaned up the Windows.old folder via Settings>System>Storage, Click Storage>Temporary files, tick the option to delete previous Windows version, delete.

It worked out nicely. As I had calculated, free space is about the same I had before the update. Maybe 20MB more or 20MB less.

I notice a lot of people rush to using Disk cleaner almost immediately after Windows updates or after a major update like this one. In my personal case, I haven't used Disk cleaner at all and free space in my laptop is almost identical to what I had in mid July after upgrading to Creators. That is despite all the updates from August, Sept and October. Note: I haven't deleted any old files and the many files, videos I downloaded since, have all been deleted after using them

The only cleanup that I do on my own is when I gotten rid of the Windows.old folder like I did just now. The rest is done by Windows cleaning up on its own, this takes place after the regular monthly updates. I can almost tell the exact time is doing it. And after is done, I see the cleanup reflected in Events in Event viewer. This automatic cleanups usually take place within a couple of days after the updates.

The end result to date is perfect cleanup with no leftovers of any kind.

Edit: I made a mistake, I ended up gaining about 2GB of space after deleting the Windows.old folder. My eyes are getting old, I thought I saw 816GB of free space when actually it is 818GB. 816GB and some is what I have had as free space for the past 3 months. I reckon thats because FCU is smaller in size than Creators.

Good info Bo about Storage Sense. I have upgraded 2 machines to 1709 through Windows Update. Everything is fine except on one machine there are now 2 empty folders in C, Windows.old and Windows.old(1) which cannot be deleted.

Windows.old.JPG I've tried your methods to no avail, not a big deal per se, and by all means a Linux live CD would wipe them out in no time except I have to change the boot sequence in BIOS to boot from a CD... Any other suggestions before using Linux?

@Osaban if the files haven't been removed after a reboot then it should also be possible to remove them via Safe Mode.

I've upgraded four computers to Fall Creators Update, so far. I did the first upgrade from an ISO before FCU was officially released. I upgraded the next two via Windows Update. The fourth computer did not show FCU in Windows Update yet, so I used the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant to upgrade.

I had minor issues when upgrading. On my main laptop which has hundreds of programs installed on it, the upgrade initially failed, but went smoothly after doing a clean boot. Another laptop got stuck when getting the update ready to be installed. I rebooted and this time was able to upgrade from Windows Update. The other two upgrades completed on the first attempt.

All the laptops are working fine since upgrading. Two of them are 11 years old. One has a Bluetooth error in Device Manager, so I'll have to reinstall Bluetooth drivers. But, that's the only issue I've experienced so far.

I've yet to check one laptop, but on the other three, after running Disk Cleanup as admin to remove the old Windows files, there was no Windows.old folder remaining.

Thanks bidd, unfortunately it doesn't work. I did a clean install, and believe it or not those empty files are still there... When I have time I'll try with a Linux live CD, although they are quite harmless...
