WinPatrol WAR (formerly WinAntiRansom)

Discussion in 'other anti-malware software' started by haakon, Dec 17, 2015.

  1. So the test of @cruelsister showing HPMA fails against ransomware are all disqualified as non prevalent ;)

"Prevalent" is the word here. Though I won't continue arguing with you as it leads to nowhere.

    @erik--

From everything I've read, it appears that HMPA is compatible with Windows XP SP3. However, just thought I've have you confirm that before I try installing. Thanks.

cruelgirl tested some new variant of cryptoware and it apparently bypassed HMPA, although I dont know if hmpa 3.5 would stop it, as she tested on the current release version.

Oh My! And I am trying to be so nice...

There are ransomware strains that are current and also are a Clear and Present danger to the public at large (an example seen at Part 6 of something that Wilders disallows). As it works by a somewhat different encryption mechanism it may (I stress "May"- remember I'm trying to be nice) bypass current protection routines. But as the majors (no names) are in Beta's I felt it would be not appropriate to dwell on this further.

Although HMPA is a very elegantly coded product (worth having) and those that wrote it are almost smart enough to be female, a bit of tough love is needed. Malware is being developed that surpasses the protection currently extent (built on the work of Amy B at Third Tier). Also protection should be afforded to areas other than the Users directory. This would provide a product that even I could not ever criticize (not really, but I am trying to be nice ).

Yes HMPA runs on XP SP3 up to Windows 10 Redstone 1.

  7. Don't worry, I won't give you another reason to "prevalently" promote your product in a competitor's thread.

Be a sport and do what you promise (don't respond and stop posting about HPMA in WAR's thread)

We do what we promised: HitmanPro.Alert version 3.5 (link) now blocks HydraCrypt, Petya and Mischa. All reported by @cruelsister :thumb:
The HMP and HMPA thread is filled with posts of other products. I do not see the problem me responding to a post which mentions HMPA. But as you wish, next time I'll respond to a post via a PM ;). Kinda goes against the nature of a public forum ...

  9. Amy B is probably Amy Babinchak, with her Ransomware Prevention Kit.

I am not sure why you are mentioning this, other than a tongue in cheek reference to Erik Lomans claim that HPMA (2.5 released in November 2013) was the "world's first anti-ransomeware" while the Ransomware Prevention Kit was released earlier (in October 2013).

    Hi Vitek and all

    Two things.

    1. The beta is private, and Erik asked for feedback by PM. IT SHOULD NOT BE DISCUSSED HERE.

    2. Please, NO POLITICS

Yes, the beta is private and feedback should be given by PM, but I don't believe "private" means it can't be mentioned; it's not a secret.

    Hi Victek

I agree with you about no. 1 to a point. Problem is mentioning it then opens things up to discussion.

I really like the new ability to remove the "Does not exist" entries and the ability to remove data from action pages. My monitored program count went from 77 to 201 now that the entire system drive is scanned. I like that the tray icon changes color if protection is stopped, however, I could do without the reminder message. I can see the tray icon just fine without the message. An option to hide/unhide the message would work.

Every since I installed WAR I had two entries in SafeZone Actions that I could not delete. Today, I was able to delete these entries. I highlighted the action pages in the attached image.

Previous versions had the "Remove items" on the menu bar or right click context menu only on the Access History page. Bret's change log does say "remove data" if that confused the matter. (The items are data, of course, but the change log should have been specific.) Or you might never have tried to remove items from those pages and noticed you couldn't.
