Thanks Frederic and everyone else associated with Look 'n' Stop. I look forward to installing the final release of v2.06.

I noticed in the change log that 2.06 does not have support for service mode if LnS is installed on Windows Vista. Will this be permanent, or are there any plans to make LnS work in service mode under Vista?

Thanks again for the best firewall I've ever used :)

As you know, Vista has a lot of changes, one change causes incompatibility with the current Service design, this hopefully will be addressed in the future. :)

    Thanks RyanM for your appreciation.

Yes, exactly, the current way Look 'n' Stop handles the service (under 2000/XP) no longer works under Vista.

Yes, we will try to provide an update to have the service start mode (and the security center registration) working under Vista.

Since looknstop doesn't run as a service, I assume it leaves some level of vulnerability when you first boot and when no one is logged into any of the accounts on the machine. (I have four computers at home with four family members who switch between them from time to time.)

As a stopgap, I have been leaving the Vista Window FW enabled with "stock" rule settings which should be sufficient for protection with no one logged in running applications. So far I have not had any issues.
Are there any known issues with this type of setup?

    Thank you,
    Mark

I’ll clarify my question to avoid getting the obvious replies after looking at my own post. What I am asking is whether there are any compatibility issues beyond the obvious one of keeping the two firewalls in sync. The Vista FW is pretty "loose", particularly when it comes to outbound. In fact, its default behavior is similar to a typical HW firewall.

If I tighten or loosen things up for my applications in looknstop, I will have to be aware of possibly having to make corresponding changes in the Vista FW. For the most part, that doesn't appear to be the case at the moment on the “loosening side” since the Vista FW is pretty loose as it comes out of the box.

    Hi meschubert,

There is no known incompatibility to run simultaneously Look 'n' Stop and Vista Firewall.
The only thing is it could become more complicated to troubleshoot when something is blocked (you need to determine first which firewall is blocking).

Normally before the 1st user logs on, the risk comes more from the inbound and yes the Vista should block unwanted packets.
Vista with UAC is supposed to protect you against malware that could attempt to install and run before the 1st user logs on.

    Regards,

    Frederic
