Beginning in 2011, all hard drives will use the 4K format system, to replace the 512 byte sector system. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8557144.stm.
Question: if I create a system partition image now from a 512 byte hard drive, and later try to restore it to a new, 4K drive, will the restore work? Does it depend on the OS, XP or 7?

If you restore a backup from a 512 HD and restore it to one of the new 4K HD, it will be misaligned and noticeable performance decrease. Paragon worked with Western Digital and developed a Alignment tool that emulates and realigns the hard drive.

And I'm sure other major HD manufacturers will have similar tools.
